Looks like they are sorting it now. As a webmaster myself I have a bit of sympathy - these attackers can sometimes come out of nowhere and cause a lot of hassle.

CAPTCHAs (those anti-spam passwords) do help, but they also get in the way of real posters and the spammers are getting better at working around them (in some cases by employing real people!)

Post limits aren't fool proof either, as they can be beaten by registering multiple accounts from different locations or hijacking real accounts.
Note: Unless otherwise stated, my property related posts refer to England & Wales. Please make sure you state if you are discussing Scotland or elsewhere as laws differ.

I think we need to be patient with the Mods. They clear it pretty quick, and I rather the odd day of spamming to having to deal with annoying CAPTCHAs or posting limits.

If it goes crazy for days at a time maybe consider some controls, but I think for the majority of it comes to life suddenly then goes away. And it's fairly obvious - unless you really think this is the place to come for U21 football streaming!

Did anyone notice that the CAPTCHA things on the olympic ticket site were insane. Half the time I couldn't work them out... DH got some music notes the other day instead of letters!

Just put a line on old threads to get them to the front like:

"This post is to push down the football spam plaguing this forum"

  • All I wanted to do was come on here and read of peoples' housing woes and (in some cases) joy and spy on some funny rightmove houses and all there is is football spam, nice...
Is it worth me pressing spam for all of them?
  • It is awful - but some property forums have little else but nonsense. Look at the latest example on a sub-board about estate agents - it isn't even good English:
    payment bond

This details is developed to offer obligees who may want to confirm the validity of certainty ties that they are being requested to agree to.
    Thanks.

If you can work out what that has to do with estate agents....

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.

Whilst I appreciate the intention, it actually makes things worse - the football spam is obvious, whereas bumped threads aren't.
I've just opened several threads purporting to have new posts to find that the "new" posts are of no relevance to the thread in question :-(
