I'm not reassured. The letter to the old address should be a backstop to proper ID checks. Anyone can pose as living somewhere and take the post in off the postie to save them the trouble, intercepting the letter in the process, then hiding until the postie has gone. I've known it happen.

I did redirection completely online when we moved house. They write to your current address to warn that mail is going to be redirected in case it is fraudulent.

I had to give no ID just the names of the people living in the house
I just had a look on the Royal Mail website and in the first instance, it looks like you need to create an account in order to be able to redirect mail. Is that correct please?

Are you sure that the online redirection did not ask you for any dates of birth? The reason I ask is because the 'Customer checklist pdf' found on the page below

    https://www.royalmail.com/delivery/inbound-mail/redirections

says clearly "We use a credit reference agency for identity verification, this is not a check of your credit worthiness, but helps us establish proof of identity".

To establish such proof must require a date of birth.........

    Cheers

Credit reference might confirm that the person's details are correct in the sense that such a person exists.
However it cannot check that this is the person requesting the mail redirection, which is the key check to carry out to prevent fraud/identity theft/whatever.

The only way Royal Mail should be allowed to offer this service is with full photographic ID, set up in person at a post office. Any other method is too open to fraudsters.
  • If it helps, I tried to do this online recently and it wouldn't let me! I had to go in branch with ID instead. It said that it could not confirm my identity.

So those of us without photo id should be damned? Great.
  • There was, (I think?) a parliamentary committee some time ago charged with looking into Royal Mail's services - and I believe it, too, was somewhat critical of 'redirection applications on line' for the reasons discussed.

As for the 'date of birth' requirement, my understanding (from past transactions) is that it determines the 'proof of identity' requirement for Royal Mail. (under-16s apparently not needing it).

Hate to be a 'Job's Comforter' but I found redirection to be a bumbling, error-ridden service from Royal Mail when I used it - I received someone else's post, had my own post delivered to my old address etc.

I wrote to the Royal Mail Group chairman - and received an assurance it wouldn't again. Two days later, it did..!:rotfl:

Having said that, I would still use the service as you never know if a private individual is actually going to forward your mail for you. There is a Postal Review Panel you can complain to if things go wrong

    ?????!?????!!!!!

Alli can say is I never went into a post office to do this, so therefore showed no ID

It was done online in about 5 minutes. Yes you have to register with royal mail and all my mail was and is being re directed.

I paid for a years worth but in hindsight 6 months would have been sufficient
