Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

My sister changed my niece's surname to her own but that was at the age of 4 and the father had not had any involvement with the child (or my sister) from a few weeks of age.
It was quite a simple procedure but she did have to declare the father was absent - to this day my niece has never seen the father. My sister met a man later on and they lived as a family and had more children but it was never thought to change the niece's surname again.
We also have 3 surnames in our family unit - my older children (X), my maiden name (Y) and partner and our children(Z). I can't say it has ever been an issue apart from when the older kids school would call up and assume I was Mrs X as that is what they were called.
Oh ..... and a redirection costs more cos you pay per surname lol

Mind you, his stepdad being called Bond could have been a factor :rotfl:

Oh dear! lol Off topic but I actually think that would have been kinda cool. ;) It has more kudos than other "famous" names and I can't really see much downside. Unless you grow up to have a distinctly un-James Bond physique, in which case there might be less pleasant teasing. However, it's good that he was offered the choice and that his wishes were respected - presumably by all parents.

My children do not see they Dad. That is his choice.

My son (who has asd and was about 7 at the time) asked why we had different names. I explained and said if he wanted to change his name I would look into it . But it was his choice.

To which he replied ' I want to be called JAMES LEWIS BOND':rotfl:

We never found out where he got the LEWIS bit from.:)
  • leave it as it is, i'd even go as far as to tell her she wants to think herself lucky the dad is around and she should do nothing to jeopardise that.

My eldest had my name from birth as his father didnt want to know and wouldn't come to register him with me. When he went to csa to pay his way (his decision, think he thought money would make up for being absent - to this day I have not received a penny lol) I decided seeing as he was going to recognise his son financially that i would change his name to his dad's, did this by deed poll, so my son know's who his dad is.

Is Smith the mother's surname or the birth father's?

Smith is the birth fathers surname. The short time they were a family it was Mum Bloggs, Dad Smith and baby Smith. They never married.

Mum has since married someone else, Mr Jones, and has taken his name so is now Mrs Jones. They are having a baby together, who will be baby Jones and Mr Jones already has a child (8) who is Master Jones.

    Does that make sense?

  • digressing here.

reminds me of someone I know. Miss Smith, married 3 times, divorced twice and widowed once. Reverted to maiden name after each divorce and initially double-barrelled last marriage (until she got tired signing an extra-long name !). She has been called:

    Miss Smith
    Mrs Jones
    Miss Smith
    Mrs Brown
    Miss Smith
    Mrs Smith-Allen
    Mrs Allen

I won't tell you what I called her

Depending on the age of the child has anyone asked him/her what name they would like to be known by, considering the new family dynamic? Surely the thoughts and feelings of the child itself are paramount to what either of the parents would prefer to happen.
