As far as I'm concerned the sky is purple swirls - it doesn't make it the reality.

    .

I was actually exaggerating for comic affect ;) but 5.30 is a very early time to eat dinner, particularly as many people won't even have left work by this time.

It was only intended to be a throwaway comment!

At no stage did I say my kids didn't do anything!

They strip and remake their beds with clean linen, make beds, empty dishwasher, wash and dry dishes, do bits and pieces of shopping.

That was not what my thread was about!

I'm puzzled. Why are they washing and drying dishes when you have a dish washer?

No, just a stiff broom - it's only under the lintels and around the guttering. Prevents any nasties from lurking. Makes it easier to see any potential problems too and keep on top of them.

Not everything is suitable for being washed by a dishwasher.
  • I'm feeling a bit hard done by now - I'm a full-time working mother, household of 5, and I don't even have a dishwasher! :(

I don't know anyone who hasn't finished their evening meal by 6.30pm at the very latest- and usually earlier, but the majority of people I know have Primary school aged kids and childcare around her predominately finishes at 6pm latest. The nursery that offers after school care for up to 11yo's closes at 5.30pm and the wrap around care on DD's school site that I use, at 6pm. As a consequence most people have fitted their work hours around this.

On the day in question, I didn't have to call en-route to pick up DD as adult Neice was doing voluntary work in her school and picked her up for us and hubby was ealy home so started tea. The point I was making to the OP, is that if a meal is ready (or about to be) as she come in and is eaten and dishes cleared away then IME I found the rest of the time stretched longer.

I can understand why the OP has asked. She currently works part-time and maybe hasn't worked full-time since having kids (or maybe not at all) and is wondering how to fit in the household jobs into a much less time-span. If her youngest is 11 it sounds like he's just gone to Secondary school and she is looking to up her hours. That's to be commended, many times I've seen criticism from people from posts that read 'My 16/18 yo has just finished school and we've lost our tax credits and I/we don't work many hours- how will we manage'. In this case the OP is thinking ahead, she just wanted some help/ideas to organise her time.

Kids of 11 and 13 should definitely be doing their bit - look after own rooms and help in other areas, perhaps on a rota.

If the place is kept tidy, then a quick hoover once a week is enough. (it's all my house gets)

I've been Money Tipped! Debt-free and Proud!
I am a single mum, and when i was working full time, i would get up at 6am (instead of 7am), put the radio on and get as much of the housework done as possible in that hour.

The first thing i would do is put the washing on, then fill the sink with hot water and dishes.
Do the dusting and tidying, then come back to the washing (which has, by this time, finished the cycle), put it out on the line/tumble dryer.
Then go on to the dishes, which have been soaking for all that time, in hot water, so are easy to wash :)

Hoovering got done while i was waiting for dinner to cook, and the bathroom got cleaned as i was drying myself in the bathroom, after a shower/bath.

its all about making the most of the time you have.
