    "J.Clarkson go faster stripes"?

Have you ever actually watched Top Gear?
    I'll give you serious suggestion.
    1997 BMW 323i.

Have you actually read my post, what part of "new" did you not understand ?
  • I always find these "what car should I buy" threads strange. If I wanted a new car, I would draw up a list and then go and try out the ones in my price bracket.

Not sure where to post this, such a big forum !

I want a minimum cost new(new retail) car
It should ideally be a hatchback (for carrying stuff), have 4 wheels, (1 on each corner !), and an engine!! Seats, 1 or 2 people.
I dont want any J.Clarkson gofaster stripes, nor CD players or air condx, no frills.
Just a car that can get me to the local shops and serve as a spare if the primary car goes legs up !

So far I see the Nissan Pixo and Kia Picanto,
    anything else ?
Included _upfront_ costed MOT/servicing longterm deal/guarantee would be a consideration.

    thanks.

I have a vauxhall corsa, has some frills but there are more basic models that you can get for £169 a month, no deposit, 100,000 mile guarantee

I 2nd the Citigo (or Mii or Up!) see what dealers you have near you.

    From Honest John:

    Citigo (2012 - )
Good: Great looking small car based on Volkswagen Up. Ideal for town. Economical and cheap to run. Lower prices than Up and SEAT Mii. First available with an automated manual.

Quite so, yes, that is what I am trying to do !
Once upon a time we had 3 new car dealers within walking distance and 2 more a short ride away. So it was easy to draw up a short list.
Now we have just 1 dealer (Skoda I think, ex Rover) 5ml away, and the few others that remain in business are a long way away. So I need to either buy lots of magazines or ask on a helpful forum ;)
Thanks for your help - not.

Yep, done that, only 1 now (see above) so I want to see what else there is on market before I go visit that one.

  • with a new car as a spare car doing very little miles youd damage the engine in it, they are not forgiving at all with shop and sunday miles or being sat dorment for long periods.

youll be paying for services (possibly dealer prices) for a car you dont really use ,insurance and possibly tax.

if it were me in your situ, i would look at something that is excempt from tax, a classic car, that has cheap service parts, and pennies for classic insurance as your mileage by the sounds of it would come in lower than the 5-6k a year mark.

but your desire is to have a brand new vehicle, so ill respect that and i too would second the citigo, or the YETI, or roomster.

if it must be new i'd probably buy a vw up!.

good reviews and looks pretty good, and i'd pay the extra £300 or so for the VW badge....

if you can stretch a bit i'd buy a vw polo for about £9000-10000, we have one and its outstanding value for money. your talking an extra few thousand for a car which is much more spacious and the inside looks really well put together - no cheapo plasticy parts that you'd get in a nissan pixo (yuck) and the like.

Wont get that problem in my suggestion:D Wont even get parking dings in the doors!
Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

Got a huge Buzz out of it.

Yes, I agree with all that !
The classic option has also been under consideration.
( and SWIMBO is already making overtures to take on the new car and demote hers to 'spare' !!! :) so it isnt all fixed in stone yet)
But I thort Id keep the first post/question simple, cos I simply dont know what the new car scene is these days.
Yeti and roomster, new to me, added to list.

Thanks as well to all other posters for their suggestions,
getting to quite a long list now !
