Well today I went to pets at home for lots of things.
Wasn't sure what size collar to get him at all so just got their 'basics' one in the size for a springer spaniel... medium I think. It's adjustable though so should do, plan on getting a harness but did not want to spend money today on a puppy one without knowing the exact size, collar and lead will do for the garden breaks anyways as plan on doing toilet breaks on a lead as part of his training.
His breeder text me to say he has had his last meal with his siblings and is in bed for the night.
It's nearly puppy day !!0 -
Very exciting! Have you got a crate for him? I had one for my Shep when he was younger and it proved to be a godsend. He loved it and we got a proper bedtime routine, with me saying 'bed', in he went, tail wagging, toys went in after him, light out and no fuss. (Bit like having toddlers!) It saved him chewing up the house when I wasn't around, but the huge thing was the accelerated house training. He never messed in his crate at all, and was clean in the house day and night within a week.
I thought it might have been because he was a clever boy, but I used the same technique for my Spinone who has a brain like a shellfish, but it worked just the same in the same time!
They now don't have their crates, but when I dug out the (smaller) crate for a few days after the Spin was neutered, they were both trying to get in!0 -
I do have a crate and he goes into a crate in his breeders so he shouldn't be scared of it. Got a blanket to put over the front at night too. The crate is the size for a XXL dog so he will have lots of room in it. Atm have a folded single duvet in it, a blanket and some toys. His little water bowl is hanging on it but going to put cable ties on it if he managed to knock it off ( which I am 99% sure of).
Puppy proofed our gate today, its iron and he would possibly have fit under or through it so we bought some steel mesh.0 -
My Mastiff wasn't interested in Kongs or all the other teething toys there are out there...he went straight for the kitchen cabinet wooden knob handles.
On collars, as mine slowly grew up to a 28" neck I made him collars from paracord - mostly because commercial ones rarely come in a width for a giant. I still do make them as 'knock about' collars because they're massively strong and you can make them look how you want to using different knotting techniques and different cord colours. here's the last one I did:“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”
