Brighton (All Stations) - What does it mean?

I want to buy two tickets from Hove to East Croydon for tomorrow.

When I search online I find that it is much cheaper to travel from Brighton to East Croydon than it is from Hove to East Croydon.

However the search results show Brighton [All Stations] to East Croydon. Does this mean I can use these tickets from Hove? - given that Hove is within the city of Brighton and Hove.

The lady at the Hove ticket office says I can't, but I don't always trust the advice given by ticket office staff.

I think you will find that it means valid from any station with the name 'Brighton' in it. Obviously there is more than one station in Brighton. Bit like Portsmouth and Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour. But although Fratton is also in Portsmouth, a ticket wouldn't be valid unless it had the name 'Fratton' printed on it.

The main station in Brighton is the only one with the word "Brighton" in it. I've searched on Google and I can't find any official definition of "All Stations." I would have thought it would be reasonable of someone to think that Brighton (All Stations) covered journeys from Hove, as Brighton and Hove are part of the same city - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brighton_and_Hove

There is Brighton (the end of the line) and also London Road Brighton (the one before it) on the Lewes link

Interesting theory but unfortunately I don't think it works like that. Had Hove station been named 'Brighton and Hove' or similar then yes but it isn't. Brighton (all stations) means all stations bearing the name Brighton and as has been pointed out there are just two, London Road (Brighton) and Brighton.

  • What it means is that it covers travel to stations within the Brighton Group. Unfortunately I am not able to list those (IT access) BUT if you go to RailUK forums there are plenty of folk who can and will....

I am sorry to say that the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) Routing Guide says that the above is complete and unmitigated rubbish!

There are two stations in Brighton Routing Point Group, the first is Brighton, the second is Hove.

However, fare calculation and validity is a minefield; I repeat my suggestion to go onto a forum, particularly the fares and routing area, of experts.

Given that Portsmouth Group consists of:
    BEDHAMPTON
    COSHAM
    FAREHAM
    FRATTON
    HILSEA
    PORTCHESTER
    PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR
    PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA

you really couldn't have picked a worse or more erroneous example.....

That examples wrong though as Fratton does count in that situation. :o

Hubby asked if he could get off at Cosham on the way home the other day (before boarding) and was told he was allowed.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Well if that turns out to be the reason then my theory isn't 'complete and unmitigated rubbish' is it.
