Halifax / Wonga repayments

Can anyone give me a 100% honest answer please, if you cancel a Halifax debit card but keep account open can Wonga still access your account and debit money? A lot of people say they cant with a Halifax account but others say they can.
I want to enter into a payment plan with Wonga but do not want them to clear me out before i confirm the payment.

    No they can not take money from Bank account only with the debit card details you gave them. Good Luck
  • I am still using the same account but with a different card, sort code & account No would still be the same but i presume the card No & security code on back will be different
  • It very much depends. If you have a CPA set up they can continue taking the money from any card linked with that account. Your best bet would be to ensure that you have cancelled your CPA with both Wonga and with Halifax. You can cancel with Halifax on the phone and it may be worth doing this ASAP so that Wonga cannot take funds before you have agreed your payment plan with them

    CPA = Continuous Payment Authority
    Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!? :huh:
  • I dont know to be honest, i have been told though if Halifax cancel a card then no payments can be taken, only your direct debits which are set up
  • If you ring the bank they can tell you if what you have is a continous payment authority. Best bet would be to give them a quick ring. They were really helpful when I wanted to cancel my cpa. (Make sure you ring the number on the back of your card not the normal telephone banking number though)

    Why take the chance?

    The best thing to do would be to use a different account if you have one or set one up (a basic account with no overdraft) and then when you have set up the repayment plan, give Wonga the basic account details and only put in there what you have agreed then there will be no danger of them taking more than they say, and in my experience when I was having problems I cancelled my debit card and they were not able to take any money out so that was never an issue when everything had been cancelled.

    Also ask them for a written agreement of your re-payment plan that way you have in writing what they have agreed should they decide to try and clean out your account.
  • When the Halifax debit card is cancelled Wonga cannot access your account even if you keep the account open because the debit card is no longer valid

    It is not inaccurate advice! When you cancel your debit card with Halifax they will NOT pay out, I know this from person experience and can prove it. I had a loan from wonga, something happened and I couldn't pay straight away, the day before the payment was due I cancelled my debit card, the next day I received an email from wonga stating they had tried to obtain payment but couldn't as the bank returned the request with card unauthorised, they said they would try taking the money again for the next few days.

    I phoned Halifax and they said they would not pay out any money to anyone who used the details of my old debit card as it does not exist anymore. Wonga did try to get the money again, and kept trying but the bank would not pay out, so the advice given is not false, at least where Halifax is concerned, I don't know about any other bank
