Daft question probably but I take it I can go into Howdens showroom and have a look about. Just checking its not trade only. I would phone them but they are closed Sunday and I plan on popping up when they open tomorrow if I can.

The have lots of optional features, are any of these good and worth having?

showroom is a very generous word, a few small displays at best. Designed out of whatever discontinued and damaged stock they have laying about. But you can go in just dont expect any prices. What optional features were you thinking about? soft close most other places give this as standard....

Here is my Howdens experience as a customer...with a bit of background too....

We havel property which was a former family home that we now are in the process of refitting to a "good" standard for rental...and it has required the complete gutting of the kitchen. Its an L shape off the dining room so potentially is a similar size to your measurements. We have wall and base units around the complete L with drainer and taps and an integrated oven/hob,with laminate worktops.

The builder we chose uses Howdens and I believe he also gets a generous discount on the range...he sent us along to our local branch to look at kitchens and whilst the set up ranges were perhaps not as good as other mainstream kitchen outlets we were able to get a general idea of the quality and finish we could expect...and with the aid of the design facility a reasonable representation of what our finished kitchen would look like...

So yes I do believe you can visit the local outlet and look round and certainly the staff we dealt with were very helpful.

In terms of what we chose we had the burford range...I believe that to me a mid range...the quality of units are not bad and with a few tweeks to handles etc I am quite pleased with the overall look now the kitchen is in....we didnt opt for soft close or any of the other bits and bobs but did go for a more contempory tap than the standard.

In terms of price it was very comptative, its not a huge kitchen and I think from memory the total was around £2400 to include a fitted oven and hob too....on top of that we obviously paid our builder to fit and this also inluded all tiling to the walls and floor and plastering the walls and levelling the floor

We opted for metro style tiles for the walls and used those for splah backs and will be painting the remaining visable walls...
Floor tiles came from B&Q and were very reasonable something like £10 per square metre...although dont underestimate the cost of tile adesive and grout..gosh that worked out almost as much as the tiles!

Everything was fitted or laid by the builder and I believe the total came in at around £4500

I do agree with a previous poster who says dont expect Howdens to give you a price...I guess this is because the amount of discount offered to the trade does vary...although rightly or wrongly our builder was very upfront about the cost of the kitchen to us,and I am aware it was purchased at quite a discount....
I would certainly recommend you get a good fitter,as that really can make all the difference in the final look and finish

The order was delivered on time so ive no complaints there either...perhaps my one negative would be the kitchen planner that was sent out after our initial visit to the "showroom"...who decided to fill the space with more units and design the kitchen he wanted to sell rather than the one we wanted to purchase, although it was easy to just revert back to our original ideas with no further sales pressure.

All in all it was a postive experience we had with Howdens and the kitchen seems certainly good for purpose so I guess I can be classed as a "satisfied Customer"

Hope your kitchen refurb goes well!!

  • Well I went into the local Howdens this morning. Showroom was ok and staff very helpful. Made an appointment for the designer to come out to then give quote to fitter. It did make a difference looking at them in the flesh. Put me off the white units in Greenwich and another range but like the white in Burford. Cost is a big thing to us as we are doing the whole house at the moment so really hoping I can get everything within £4k for the kitchen. Appreciate peoples replies, helps me think about things writing it down. I am going to try a local independant company as well once Howdens have done there bit to compare.

That is ridiculously low. You have either no overheads at all, or more likely, have grossly miscalculated what they actually are.

Depends where you live mate. Most tradesmen round here (N.E.Lincs) are struggling to find any regular work and would snap your arm off for £125 a day.

Who on earth fits kitchens or bathrooms or anything else on day rate? More to the point who in their right mind contracts a project like this at day rate. Its almost a licence to print money irrespective of what an individuals overheads are.

    Cheers

  • We paid £2000 for our kitchen fitter (took 10 days to complete), he did everything except the plastering and electrics, which he contracted out. We paid and additional £500 for building materials, and £100 for the electrics, plastering was included in my fitters price along with the skip.

We went for a Benchmarx kitchen which we're really pleased with. Think it was around £3.3k for a 3mx3m kitchen.

    Hope that helps
  • I am currently renovating my house ready for the birth of my first child in November.
I am trying to get quotes for the tiling of the kitchen floor approx 6-8m2, the bathroom floor to ceiling approx 6m2 with average ceiling height, and a small porch at the bottom of the stairs about 1.5cm2.
Bare in mind me and my other half have already bought all the tiles, the adhesive, the grout, removed the old bathroom suit, and re skimmed the bathroom walls.

This is one quote I've had back, which I think is extortionate, tell me if am wrong! They want £1765!!!
