  • I shall call this how not to do your wedding .

these are just some of the thing I have heard  of a weddings .
My parents  had to pay for there own wedding .They came from towns 70 miles apart and didnt invite any of my fathers family who where already married .my mother was going to live with her inlaws so this didnt go down well.

MY aunt didnt tell anyone she was getting married .Her wedding reception  ( four 4 people )was in a cafe around the corner  ,she then moved into his house where he had lodgers and they didnt even tell the lodgers they where married .when his two aunts called to see them after hearing about the wedding they closed the curtains so they wouldnt see her washing on the line .My aunt and uncle where 38 years of age at the time.

My uncle had a daughter 6 months old before his wife wrote to her inlaws to say they thought it was time everyone knew they where married .

A friend got married but didnt invite his only brother  as the bride had too big  a family and they where not being invited .
My cousin (who's parents where dead ) bought new furniture and carpets for the house 3 weeks before the wedding .One week before the wedding the groom (not my cousin ) went to my elderly parents and told them they (my parents ) would have to pay for the wedding as the bride and groom had know money .
they also had a list of wedding presents and guests where told if you dont like whats on the list you can give us money .They played the simpathy vote ...poor girl  parents dead nobody belong to her .My brother bought them a £70 present of there list .(1986 prices )
The following year my brother got married and my cousin gave  him a second hand carving knife . She had go 2 as wedding presents ( the groom;s man didnt get the list )and the box was grease stained ,the blades where water marked .
  • Hiya everyone,

Today is my last day at work before our wedding on Saturday, so I won't be on the PC for 3 weeks (woohoo!)

Thanks to everyone who has helped with tips and good luck to everyone still planning. :)

I'll be back soon to let you all know how it went (and which money saving things worked and which didn't! ;))

  • Got my dress - the one from waimanman on eBay - yesterday. Very pleased with it! It's a little tight around the ribs (probably down to me measuring myself inaccurately!) but should be fine as long as I'm not doing too much deep breathing! I've put a couple of photos online for my mum & sister to have a look, so if anyone else wants to see it then just send me a private message and I'll give you the link.

The seller even included some pearly costume jewellery (which I'm wearing in the photos) and a nice little card wishing me all the best for my wedding!

A hint to anyone else buying online and having any adjustments done before you get the dress: if you're unsure of your measurements and can't find a professional to measure you then err on the side of caution and go for the largest measurement that you think may be applicable. You can usually get a dress taken in but there isn't always enough fabric to let it out!
  • Hi all, and many congrats to Mr and Ms Thrift.

We got married 3 yrs ago come January, and because we're members of our local Methodist Church, our church wedding actually cost nothing at all - they don't charge members.

We didn't have a big honeymoon because we'd only just come back from a 'big trip' to North America in the October. We only had a honeymoon at all because I was determined to have one - an older couple, my second marriage and his third, and neither of us had ever had a honeymoon before. So we stayed in a 200-year old pub in the Cotswolds for 3 nights!

Using our own car, friends acting as photographers, all kept the cost down. But it was a wonderful, memorable occasion nevertheless. Which goes to show, it's really the wedding that's important, mainly it's the ceremony that matters, and the party and honeymoon are much less important. We had a nice lunch in a local pub/restaurant for 18 of us, and most of them were people who'd helped us e.g. with the church flowers, taking photographs, cleaning and setting up the church etc, not forgetting the minister!

Whether you spend thousands and go into debt for a wedding, or whether you spend very little, you are still just as married at the end of it all!

    Best wishes to all

    Margaret

  • I'm sure someone must have already suggested using eBay, but if so, I had to repeat it!

I've just bought a lovely wedding dress, brand new from Hong Kong, for under £50 including postage. They asked for my measurements so it should be a reasonable fit - and if some minor alterations are needed then I've got plenty of budget left over to afford them! I haven't got it yet (just won it yesterday) but previous buyers are full of praise for the seller (waimanman) and several mention that delivery only took about a week! I'll post an update when I've got the dress.

There are masses of other wedding & bridesmaid dresses on there too, and there's a wide choice of dresses made to measure for well under £200. Maybe it's just the time of year, but a lot of the dresses that are on there don't get bid on at all. I've found bridesmaid dresses made to measure for £59 "buy it now" (that's excluding postage though) so you can get a set of matching made-to-measure dresses for a very reasonable price.

i have read several posts about waimanman. i have searched ebay but i can't fiind this seller. can someone point me in the right direction.

i'm getting married 21st may 2005. my son now informs me that it is cup final day. i will just have to hope that birmingham city are not playing villa on that day!
  • hello again. i made a hash of the last post. i was trying to put a quote in. anyway, i am still hoping that someone will help me find the seller WAIMANMAN on ebay.

    thanks
  • Here you go chrissie
    WAIMANMAN
  • thanks, sally. i think that the reason i could not find the buyer is because i was looking in the plus sizes.

anyway, if anyone is interested, debenhams have got tiaras with 50% off. bought one a merry hill today.

also, try this web site, https://www.theknot.com.

i have been searching american web sites to try and find a suitable dress. this one lets you put the style that you want, eg length, neck line, train, sleeves etc and then comes up with suitable styles. saves hours of trawling the net. also has a free web site service for your wedding.

On the subject of rings, we had looked round jewellry shops and not seen anything we wanted as we had seen one we both liked in a magazine. Unfortunately they would have cost £700 each.

We found a company called Goldfinger at a wedding fair and the lady came round to our house and showed us loads. I chose one (totally different to the one I had seen) but hubby still wanted the other one so they made it for him.
Cost under £100 for his and £150 for mine (it had diamonds in it).

    https://www.goldfinger-rings.com

As far as I remember they have representatives across the country and I would highly recommend them for their prices and fab services.

Never tried quoting, wonder if this will work. :)

On this tip, we had goldfinger round last night - brought literally hundreds of rings for us to tinker with, gave us a fabulous quote - will make rings to your choice of pattern, design, width, weight, etc. etc. at a far lower cost than any jeweller around here.

As long as they deliver as they promise, I shall be thrilled.
