My son has always had Nokia phones and would like a replacement one for his birthday.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable Nokia for around £100 with a camera and perhaps just basic internet access.

I have looked but there are so many different models I just don't know what is good and what isn't - totally confused:eek:

I am not an avid mobile phone user myself - just have a basic PAYG £10 one for emergency calls and spend about £5 a year on top ups :o

I would be grateful for any recommendations.

Thanks.

Nokia is not be company it once was. If your son liked the interface, that's all changed - they really only support Windows Mobile. Not only that, current models (using WM 7 or 7.5 cannot be upgraded to WM8, so you will be locked out of any upgrade path.

I'd take him to a shop and let him play with the available models - and do not consider getting him a contract (even for a millisecond).

You need to understand that for many of us, phones are a necessity and certain features are nice to have.

But for many youngsters, they are a fashion accessory, in the same way as branded trainers, shirts etc. So, you need to find out what your lad 's views are.

Nokias were the leading brand of handsets for many years, but Androids and Iphones knocked them off the top 5.

Nowadays, Nokias have the Lumina range of Windows smartphones with touch screens and you may get a 710 or 610 for your price range. But Windows 7.x phones are a very much the also rans in market penetration and a new version of Windows mobile has been announced, so expect a reduction in price of the current handsets when that is released.

But if your lad is not fashion conscious and doesn't want a big touch screen handset, then any of the mid range Nokia candy bar handsets will be a good buy, with decent battery life.

Go to the CPW or other online sites and do a compare handsets to see the different features.

In fact I see just 8 models with 3Mp+ camera in £50-£150 range.

http://www.omio .com/deals/pay-as-you-go - use filters in the tabs.

The prices are approximate as Lumia 610 was (is?) available for £80ih at Asda and 710 for about £110 at CPW.
  • The Nokia 710 at Carphone Warehouse for £100 is worth a look.

It is essentially being sold off as end of line as Windows 8 phones will be on the shelves within weeks and this phone will never get an upgrade to Windows 8 but "as is" it is a decent phone for the money.

Carphone Warehouse phones are usually unlocked.

Sometimes they take exception to being asked this in store so a question like "can I put a local SIM in when I go abroad on holiday" is a way of finding out without causing trouble.

Thanks for your replies, he has always liked Nokia because they seem to stay charged up for such a long time.

Are there any other makes/models that you would recommend?

He doesn't use it for anything work related so just basic personal use.

    Thanks again.

    .

If that's a priority, then stay away from ANY smartphone. Most need charging daily, and if you get 2 days from one charge, then you don't need a smartphone !!!!

I'd go Nokia WP7, the upgrades that you miss out on mainly will be new NFC "touch to pay" services - I assume even if he is 18+ he still wont mind carding a bit of plastic thin and compact for most pockets & paying using his physical card lol
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

No he definitely doesn't need a smart phone and I am certainly not forking out for one:eek:

I have an absolutely basic little Nokia phone which, as mentioned above, I don't use very often at all and only have to charge it about twice a year, it is really good. It can left switched on for days and just doesn't use up any power at all.

  • Although this is a topic open to debate, initially you said

"Can anyone recommend a reasonable Nokia for around £100 with a camera and perhaps just basic internet access."

The Internet access suggests a low end smartphone.

It is possible to get a conventional looking phone which does this (the Nokia C3-01 for example) but in my view the Nokia 710 would be a better experience for the same cost.
