Would you care if they were out smoking cigarettes in their garden, as most smokers do?

There's a bit of a difference between the strong smell of cannabis and the (annoying but less strong) smell of tobacco.

OP we used to live next door to a family of cannabis smokers and we could smell it constantly. We were lucky that they were evicted as their landlord sold up. Hope you get it sorted because it's horrible :(

Both are vile and lingering, the point is how would the op react to tobacco ?

    I have answered that.

So I should spend the whole summer with my doors and windows shut?

Its not the same at all. I have children, and when their friends parents drop their children round to play I dont want them thinking we are drug users. I dont want the clothes on my washing line smelling of drugs so when my children go to school the teachers will think they live in a house where drugs are smoked.

I dont care if they take drugs, I care that my house smells of them.

How much are they smoking that it's coming in to your house and going to attach itself to your clothes to the point that you are unable to get it out? I have smoking relatives and when i used to visit i would come away smelling of smoke but it didn't exactly last.

If it's as extreme as you point out then report it. Either to the LL or the police.

I really like the smell of weed and have lived with a number of smokers, can't stand tobacco tho. Am sure I would not be so accommodating if I had a child, most people I knew kept their substance use and kids separate.

They smoke eveyday for what seems like most of the afternoon and evening.

The clothes need washing again to get the smell out

What direction is the prevailing wind? Would it make a difference if they stood at the other side of the garden to smoke? Could you move your washing line? (Not that you should have to, I know.)

I wonder if one of those little tents would keep the smoke and smell contained more? It'd be comfier for them once the cold wet weather sets in as well! Do you get on well with them, could you suggest it?

Or find them a recipe for space cakes and they can get baked in more ways than one without any smoke.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.
