Out of interest does anyone know what the Standing Charge for BG Online Variable will be?

It depends on your paytype. Assuming you will be on DD, standing charges for Online Variable Nov 2013 are 29.3p/day for gas, and 16.52p for elec.

Because I've been stuck indoors today while the sun shines outside, I decided to look at the WebSaver12 t&c's. The precise wording is that WS12 will be replaced by 'Standard variable prices' (my italics). I am no lawyer, but I think that possibly means something slightly different to 'Standard Variable Tariff'

    Hey-ho - we'll find out soon enough!

Dug out a few more things...

"Standard" is capitalised in the terms and conditions- this refers to the variable tariff known as "Standard".

The tariff A-Z says that Websaver 12 gives a "A guaranteed 6% discount as compared with our Standard tariff rates."

This discount is 6% against Standard, not Clear and Simple. Tariffs like Online Variable give the guaranteed discount against C&S, and this is stated explicitly as such in the tariffs A-Z.

I doubt whether this would be accepted as a legally binding definition - the single capital letter was more likely a cunning plan by the Marketing guys to plant false ideas in the likes of you and me!

The tariff A-Z says that Websaver 12 gives a "A guaranteed 6% discount as compared with our Standard tariff rates."

But it does not say that Websaver 12 rates will be replaced by Standard Tariff rates at the end of Websaver 12

I'm sorry mate, but I think your time would be better spent trying to convince your employer's call centre people that they are consistently giving out incorrect information.
  • I'm getting confused with this. All the comparison sites are coming out close to what I pay now. The Online variable says I will pay £1 less a month than I do now.

Shall I just let it roll over to the standard tariff with no day standard charge? If I opt for online variable I'm locked in for a year even if they price increase.

The British Gas call centre will tell you in no uncertain terms that Websaver12 will 'roll over' onto Clear and Simple, which has no early exit charge, but does have a daily charge.

Unverified MSE posters on this thread will tell you that you will be switched onto the obsolete BG 'Standard Tariff'.

Why don't you just wait and see what happens at the end of Websaver12?

The email they sent me on the 31st August does say standard tariff.

"If you decide not to switch on to one of our other tariffs you’ll automatically move on to our Standard tariff on 1st October 2012. Learn more about our Standard tariff prices."

However the small print says "Online Variable November 2013 gives a 6% discount versus our current standard variable rate in force" which to me would say that the clear and simple tariff is their current standard tariff. It's all far from clear and simple.

Although for my usage the online variable works out at about £50 cheaper per year, so I'll sign up for that.

The phrase 'standard tariff' (with or without Capitals) is gloriously imprecise, and I applaud the marketing guys for their efforts.
