Hello all.
Just having a much-needed time out after making Birsay biscuits and a cheese and Quorn quiche,:o
2tonsils welcome to the Daily Thread; I for one will be very interested to hear how you are managing in Greece; we get the newspaper reports of course, but it'll be a revelation to hear it from someone actually living with the austerity measures there.I was up during the night, came down to the kitchen to get a drink of water and there was a HUGE slug on th kitchen floor! I have no idea how it got there! Revolting.Have a great day all.... think of me, in the dog house.
Flutterby you can bung anything you have to hand in veggie Shepherd Spy.;):o Except meat.:rotfl:If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
Afternoon All
JackieO - Sounds like you had a fantastic time!
Nlj - It sounds like your son's neighbour would complain whoever was living next door to him. As they say - What comes around goes around (is that the right way?)
2tonsils - Welcome, keep us informed as to how you get on.
Ironing done, washing on the line (but probably not for long!), hoover thrown about and been out for fish food.
Worked till 11 last night and working again today at 5 and I am dog tired! May try for a nap soon.
Take care. XX0 -
LW - :rotfl:
Still raining here so no WM today, but I have sorted the washing and it's in 3 piles ready to go on in the week. My WM has a 30min wash so if I get up when my alarm goes off tomorrow rather than doze then I can get 2 loads done before work.
Been to Aldi for the Super 6 veg - toms, avocado, beetroot, cuc, new pots and radish all for 39p each. Tidied and hoovered house. Kitchen cleaned and dishes washed. I will make shepherds pie later for dinner.
Just had a nice surprise visit from my brother and his fiancee. They have a campervan which they are doing up and were down West Wales for a few days, so called in on their way back to Bristol. It was lovely to see him.
Enjoying the F1 now, planning an afternoon nap after it though as I'm shattered still!

Afternoon All
I am having a chill out day today mainly because this damp weather really gets into the old joints.
Welcome2tonsils. :wave:I really feel for the people in Greece it is criminal what Europe has done to a once prosperous country. it is lovely hearing from those in other countries,(that reminds me has Shalva posted lately?). The sad thing is that I can see things rapidly going the same way in this country
nlj......... Can you not report the neighbour for harassment? There are laws against disability hate crime, report the nasty piece of pond slime to the police, they have to investigate. As for the slug _pale__pale_ We had that happen in our old house and I even found one on a milk bottle in the fridge  They are actually like stepping on sawpaper jelly, I know, I stepped on one in the garden last week :eek:_pale__pale_:eek:
Thanks for posting the new super six flutterby :T
Dinner tonight is Roast lamb ( I found a joint lurking in the bottom of the freezer :j) I haven't bought lamb in ages, it is much to expensive on a tight budget, so I am really looking forward to that.
Well off to surf BFN xBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Thanks for the warm welcome....if anyone wants to here about the austerity measures and their results so far you can catch up on the when the SHTF thread . I have put two or three long posts on there to bring everyone up to speed.
Suffice to say that most pensioners here are trying to live on around 400 euros a month, some of them had to take food out of Lidl's bins last year to see them through the winter and the stores are now collecting pasta and things to distribute .
No heating oil is being provided for the schools and there are few books being delivered to them. Many schools are facing closure and there may be no school buses this year due to lack of money.
Even though many are paying social security contributions of around 400 euros a month the doctors are charging for an appointment now and meds have to be paid for in full even if you are covered for them. Everyone is paying extra taxes even if you have no income or its been cut. This winter is going to be desperate for many families and old people.
I am trying to cut costs to a minimum to ensure we have enough to pay the taxes and eat at the same time. My husband gets a navy disability pension. We have stocked up on food and water, fuel and medicines to last us for a while in case it all gets worse.
I do my own baking and cooking and freeze it in portions. I have coeliac disease so have to avoid all grains. I have increased our intake of fruit and veggies and good old olive oil as there are signs that some foods are going up out of our price range and the forementioned are cheap here and plentiful.
I am altering many of my winter clothes so they look different and fit better and today I have been taking photos of ones that no longer fit so I can sell them on local bartering sites .
Looking forward to reading your great ideas. I am going to plant up some veggies, herbs and fruit in pots on our patio as soon as its cool enough. It's been 42 in the shade most of the summer and unbearable! I would order some online seeds but the post is very hit and miss now the post office has been closed down. The postman brings mail in the boot of his car, sometimes he turns up and sometimes he doesn't!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
2tonsils - Hello and welcome - certainly does sound terrible out here, never been to Greece in the winter - does it get very cold?
Had another successful day at the boot sale, made £70ish profit yesterday and £80 today - Shellieholly - it is a double whammy - get rid of clutter and make a few pennies out of it, it isn't that hard work either.
We are treating ourselves to a meal out tonight with some of our takings. Heading off to Chiquito later to celebrate/commiserate (on your way of thinking) the end of the school holidays(I am definitely in the celebrating camp:rotfl:)
So no cooking for me today, have just made a coffee will drink that and then clean the animals out.x0 -
nlj that neighbour sounds like a nasty piece of work!
2tonsils that sounds awful, i hope it gets better soon and it doesn't get like that here but tbh i'm not sure.
Afternoon everyone. I had my first trip to costco today and I wasn't all that impressed. I just kept thinking "it's cheaper at xxx. why would you even want that?" though there were a few good bits. Shamefully we were even thinking about bits for xmas hampers already.
I went to Birmingham market yesterday for the first time in ages and it's as good as ever, really worth the occasional trip if you're in the West Mids. There were carrier bags of baguettes for 50p, four blocks of cheese for £1, tray of 20 activia yogs £1, bowls of fruit £1 -that's a week of lunches for a family for £3.50. It was also nice to see kids who were really chuffed with a bag of OOD haribo and a £1 toy, not screaming for an ipad
Just more decluttering and ebaying for the rest of today.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
Wow adelight that sounds like a brilliant market :T sadly we don't have a market with prices any where like that in the South
.I agree with you about Costco I think that they are very expensive, we are luckier than some because we have a freezer trade shop that is open to the public near here and we save a hell of a lot, it is hit and miss though and you can't guarantee that the same thing will be there the next time that you go and all the pack sizes are catering sizes. We go every two months and I spend about £100 - £150 and that fills the chest freezer with meat, fish, pies, veg, and any niceties that they have, especially around Christmas time.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

2tonsils things sound really hard for folk in Greece and I do sypathise with you.I think a lot of folk are being squirrel like at the moment and storing as much as they can towards winter.I was talking to one of the managers in my local supermarket this morning when I went to buy some essential stuff(mostly all I buy anyway ) and he said that it is possible that bread will be around £1.60-80 a loaf by Christmas and rice and pasta will start rising steeply shortly.American harvests have been dire cerealwise, and our own harvests have been hit by the very wet summer. In the space of two weeks I have seen a rise in prices from before I went on holiday. This morning I noticed that cheese and bread had gone up already and even on the yellow stickered counter the reduced stuff was not much reduced at all even though it was by todays date iykwim.detergent seems to have gone up as well.I am making things streetch out a bit more now I am home from my hols and will only buy what's necessary and shop a lot less than I did.I have enough to last me until Thursday without going to the shops again so will try to only shop at least once every week if possible and make things last as long as I can.Its the families with children I feel for my DD is a very good manager but even she says she dreads going food shopping now.I was speaking to my eldest DDs ma-in-law at lunchtime and she told me that after all her bills are paid she will have around £140 to feed her and her OH until the end of September.I can manage fairly ok on around £100.00 per month but there is only me to feed.My DD has six mouths to feed in her family and with the kids back at school this week the bread bill will rise. She works full-time as does her OH so breadmaking isn't an option for her.I have been searching websites today to see the best deals for her for bread and Iceland seems to be not too bad with 2 Kingsmill loaves for £1.70 ,even thats gone up 20p in the past fortnight. All these 20ps add up when your buying for a family, especially when they have six packed lunches five days a week.My brother lives in France and how he manages I don't know as he only has his UK pension to live on.In the winter his local village send all the pensioners a cord of wood to help them out which is good and because its very rural where he lives often the barter system is used amonst his neighbours he will do some mechanical work on machinery or a bit of building or woodwork in return for veggies and sometimes meat from his local farmer friend. It seems like the world will be turning back that way if things keep on as they are.I feel sorry for the children who cannot have heating or books they are the future generation what have they to look forward to.
FB were the cucumbers O.K. in Aldi's ? I may hang on until Thursday and have a trip to my nearest one as tesco's wanted 80p for one this morning.I have got a large sheet of paper with different costs on it for essentials and I just look them up on the big four supermarket sites, and decide the best value for money from each shop.My furthest one away is Asda's then Morrison's then Sainsburys then Tescos, I also look at my local farm shop as sometimes they have marked down bits in there.
At the moment my freezer is three quarters full and my tinned stuff isn't too bad but I will need pasta soon as I have used it all when we were away.
Oh well at least I enjoyed my holidays and now its back to reality again.
Hope we hear more of how your managing 2tonsils as it brings things into perspective for a lot of folk on here.
Cheers chums and lets hope the economy gets better for us all.

Im a Costc0 fan as the quality of their meat / veg/ bread is second to none. Yes you can buy cheaper but often cheaper is a false economy xI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0
