Another Argos problem!

I ordered four dining room chairs from Argos on 18th August, paid by cash (and an extortionate delivery charge of £8.95) and was given a delivery date of this Monday (3rd September) and duly booked the day off work.
Today I had a phone call to say that my order couldn't be delivered and when I asked why I was told that the manufacturer had stopped making them. The girl said a flat "sorry" & didn't even offer an alternative till I asked, but the alternative is no good for me. I asked to speak to her manager & was put on hold for 25 minutes. I hung up & phoned customer service direct and got the same dull response. I was told that it was usual to wait that long.
I'm so angry I could punch a wall!! I looked everywhere for that style of chair & I can't find it anywhere else. I'm also angry that I've taken the day off work to wait for this non existant delivery. Can they do this, accept an order then say they haven't got the goods at the eleventh hour? I know I need to write and complain ( I need to calm down a bit first) but will it get me anywhere? Nobody seemed to care that they'd cocked up and I want my chairs, not a refund. Does anyone know how best to tackle this?
Many thanks.

Really?? You think thats extortionate for 4 large chairs?"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
If they've stopped making them, how do you expect to get them? Take a refund and move on.One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

If they did not have them in stock then they should not have sold them.
Argos normally have a good stock system even when the goods are supplied by a third party.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0 -
That's true, but that's now hypothetical. They don't have them so they can't supply them. It's pointless to say "Well I want them" if they don't exist. One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

If they've stopped making them why did they accept my order? I've never heard of that before. Most companies check stock first and these chairs are still on their website & app as being in stock.
I won't move on till I get decent customer service0 -
Well, good luck to you then. One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

What do you want them to do? The manufacturer of the chairs could have ended their arrangement with Argos.
They can't just magic them up, if they can't get them then they can't get them.
Also, £8.95 for 4 chairs is hardly extortionate delivery, I'd hate to see what you think of some delivery charges...0 -

Probably their system wasnt updated correctly. Things happen. Deal with it by moving on and getting something else. Argos wont just magic some out of thin air if they have none left and the manufacturers have stopped making them."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
Why are you defending Argos? There's a whole section on here about people taking time off for deliveries and "fighting your corner" for decent customer sevice, yet you persist in telling me to " move on". I
Gobsmacked at your flippancy.
All I asked for was some advice, but yet again I get attacked.0 -
What do you want them to do? Pull some out of their backsides?
They don't have the item, you can't force them to make more.0
