even bikes in the £600 bracket have cheap components most of the money goes towards the frame then gearing. they will almost certainly use cheap bottom brackets and if they have discs they will be cheap cables operated ones and suspension will be bottom to lower mid range.
top range bikes even a 5-7 year old model will always hold alot of value (maybe even half or more of original selling cost) due to the higher spec components (deore xt or xtr) eg orange ms isle origionally sold in basic spec for over £1100 that was in 1999 a bare frame second hand will still set you back £250
  • try argos bit of a sale on as well so cant go wrong

  • Also try www.parktool.com for repair instructions. I doubt you'll be any worse at it than a Halford's bike 'mechanic' (I even have issues giving them that title!)
    It's only numbers.
  • Interesting that the original Op on this thread hasn't even come back and told us what kind of bike he bought from Halfords, despite several requests to supply the information.

    Maybe it's just another troll...

Sorry, that's not true. For 600 you can get a bike with very good quality components. Aluminium frames are pretty much all the same cost to manufacture and you often find the same frame across a companies entire range with the components making up the difference in price.
