You are well within the law to keep it.

Under the Unsolicited Goods and Services Act 1971, (as amended) it is an offence to demand payment for goods known to be unsolicited, in other words, they were sent to a person without any prior request made by them or on their behalf.

Someone who receives goods in these circumstances may retain them as an unconditional gift, and does not have to pay for or return any unwanted goods. Anyone who receives a demand for payment for unsolicited goods should report the matter to their local Trading Standards Department.

However, in the case of unsolicited goods received before 1 November 2000, the recipient is required to give notice to the sender to collect them within 30 days, or otherwise to wait for 6 months, before being able to treat the goods as their own property.

Oh and another thing, if the company has your Credit Card details they are within their rights to take the money up to six years from the date of purchase.
If you did not buy it and it is not part of the pack take it back.
Why are prices for others so high, because of the thieving that goes on.
Once you are aware it is not yours and you decide to keep it you are stealing.
    "Means Rea"
All this unsolicited goods thing is utter poo, ignore them.
    Go on be honest.

    HI

Just spotted your dilemma. There's legislation covering unsolicited goods and services. Think this should help you as you didn't ask for the extra things. Just follow the guidance and you will have the best of both worlds potentially. Being honest and possibly keeping the goods with the full backing of the Law.

    best of luck!
  • I personally would ring them up and ask about the TV, ask them does it need speakers or is it all integrated? Then you will know either way and you wont be worried about it as you will then be able to make your mind up, for all you know if maybe suppose to be both bits together and your worrying yourself over nothing!

Just need to amend the post I did previously as I've spotted that the link is a New Zealand one.
    here is a UK one.

Basically you can keep them after 6 months or after a month if you advise the supplier but they do not collect them. It is up to them to arrange collection within that month. You do not have to post them back. I wouldn't use them in the meantime though or even open the box. Just wait to see what they do.

    Best of Luck.

A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriated property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.

    Theft act Sec1 theft 1968.

The definition of Dishonestly (thats you not telling them about it)
Appropriates (takes ownership of it i.e eats it, opens, wears it)
Property (Includes cash & fruits, garden flowers)
Belonging to another (err as it is!)
Intention (are you going to return it? No!)
Permanently depriving (could means making less value i.e used)

    Thats theft.
I can quite safely say that you fill the criteria.

    Anyone differ?

Yeah I completely and utterly differ. How you can say its safely theft is beyond me. You have to look after section 1 of theft act i.e section 2, and furthermore you have to look at some case law arround the subject.

It may or may not be theft.

This is not correct either, how can you say you are well within the law to keep it. This is not an unsolicited gift

I would call & ask them. As some say, it may be part of the TV anyway.

The best that can happen: It is part of the TV. Or, they may let you keep it for being honest :D (OK, I may be ever so slightly delusional :o)

The worst that can happen: They will take it away. But at least you won't be feeling guilty, which can be wonderful :).

By calling, you win either way IMO ;). So honesty is the best policy.

Calm down . The OP is only asking for advice what to do. S/he hasn't deprived anyone of anything, yet!
That's quite a bit over the top, wouldn't you say? G

I think that's the best solution. No point in keeping it, if it affects your peace of mind (which is far more valuable!). At least you'll know either way.
