I suggest that an additional reason would be that any future competitor of eBay will need to offer advantageous fees and completely free listings are the most obvious advantage over eBay.

By offering a supply of free listings, eBay makes the task of a DIRECT competitor establishing a toe hold very much harder.
By a new contender just offering free listings, its never going to be enough. All that will do is attract sellers. eBid has an abundance of sellers, but relatively few buyers. Without buyers, a platform goes nowhere.

Buyers don't care about low fees and free listings for sellers. Buyers go with the platforms that are well known, trusted and offer a good degree of buyer safety. The only real chance a new contender would have would be to run a multi million pound marketing campaign and preferably already be a big name like Google, Facebook or Tesco. Why haven't one of them already done it? Probably because they realise how hard it would be to break into the market already dominated by the likes of Amazon, eBay and Play.
  • hi, can i ask a few questions, can i list today, then tomorrow my allowance will be reset?
is it 150 free listings for the month, ie if i list more, even at 99p or less will i be charged?

also i think ebay is failing to facebook, i know numerous pages that are used to sell items. even large items, buyers know all the money the make is their own, any payments thru paypal are used worked in so fee amounts are covered.

    thanks for any help

The 150 items are a full allowance for the duration of the promotion. However, if you have any current restrictions (e.g. are a new seller) you will not get that full allowance.

99p listings are always excepted from free listing weeks/weekends. If you have, say, listed twenty 99p listings alongside your 150 free listings, you will still get those 99p listings for free but will only have 80 more for the rest of the month.

Larger items are easier to sell through Facebook, I'd agree. However, for items that can be posted, eBay is still a better bet as there is more protection for buyers, leading to better sell-through rates. I wouldn't buy anything off Facebook that I expected to come through the post unless I used Paypal. I do find eBay is losing ground in some markets, based on my own experiences this summer, but Amazon still protect buyers quite stringently so I have no objection to this as a seller so long as it gets my items sold.

There are many, many good venues to sell large bulky collection items that beat eBay hands down for efficiency and ease of use. However, with postal items, the risk is the buyer's, so eBay need to mitigate that risk with strong buyer protection. Which is why I will only go to eBid as a buyer if I cannot find an item elsewhere - which nowadays is vanishingly rare.

Ebay certainly are not 'failing' to anyone! http://www.webpronews.com/ebay-expects-13-billion-in-revenues-in-2013-2011-02

There have always been free to list platforms (freeads, gumtree, etc) but ebays revenue keeps growing.

snagglepuss, I think the facebook selling pages are completely different to ebay and there is no competition at all between them. I am a real del boy, show me a viable site and i'll be there signing up to sell things but I am extremely careful what items I list on what platforms.

I am subscribed to around 11 facebook selling sites now some of whom have over 1000 registered users, but that is still a very small pool in which to sell- and I tend to list only larger things or heavy items I can't be bothered to post.

Compare that to ebay where currently the majority of my sales are overseas, my business account for instance this week alone has had around 90% of the sales going abroad. My private one is more like half and half but I am selling off things for my sons and the collectors tend to be overseas.

I still even have 4 ebid shops (although I am always corrected as I am supposed to call them stores like the Americans), and I will persevere there until I cover my initial outlay. I also sell on Amazon

I think the trick is to have as many selling sites as possible, and target your audience
