@TMD - I seriously doubt a lot of buyers are avoiding eBay because you can't neg them. It would never occur to me to boycott Amazon because the sellers can't hit me with a visible red dot saying what a bad buyer I am for complaining that the item you sent me never arrived.

You can't leave negs for buyers many other places, so I doubt that's an issue. You wouldn't be able to leave them if you sold on the high street - and people would run a mile if you started putting name-and-shame posters up in your window. Plus it's been so long now since you could, that I'm surprised at your opinion that it is only now beginning to put people off.

Postage costs are probably a factor of why people aren't shopping on eBay; although costs are fixed on Amazon for books some pros can get round that issue. As a private seller using RM's standard service I can sell stuff on Amazon without a problem - in fact I agree with you that eBay seems to be slow this year compared to Am, and I now check what I have is on Amazon before I even contemplate an eBay listing. But that's not eBay's fault - it may be that they have free-floating postage costs shown while Amazon give you a fixed credit, but that's then under your control; if you price competitively then you might get more sales.

I didn't say buyers are avoiding Ebay, I said people (sellers) are fed up of not being able to leave negs or neutrals for people who do not pay, but that is only a very small reason why sellers are fed up, it is the sellers that generate the most income for Ebay and if the sellers go then they are not making money. Check the Discussion boards and see the people who are fed up they can't leave negs or neutrals for buyers. That is not what I was on about really that was just an extra point lower down my original post.

My main point was that people are not selling anymore on Ebay because it is not worth the time or effort and they are not making money due to the fees etc. I have had to list items I paid £3 for for 99p as people are not buying them and I've had to list for 99p start just to try and get rid as I don't want the items hanging around for the next 8-9 months until next Summer (summer clothing).

To restrict or ban someone because they were given a few low stars by people is unfair and disheartening and making sellers wonder why they are bothering especially if they are low volume sellers or Private sellers who sell a few things.

Once all my Business stock has been sold I am de-registering as Self Employed because it is not worth me selling when other business sellers selling the same stuff as me, have more items listed and come higher up in a search and will always get lots of sales while I get none, what is the point.

It is true that some items no longer sell on ebay, there is a recession on and a number of people that maybe used to impulse buy have had to be more careful. The postage rates go up every year, none of us like it but it is a fact of life, the only real damage this time round was the impact on large but very light items that traditionally went as a packet under 100g but now fall into the flat rate of £2.20. On the other hand it has been great for many book sellers who specialise in larger heavier books as their postage costs have decreased.

If your stuff doesnt sell then I suggest you need to look at your business model. I have been selling online for around 14 years now, virtually nothing I started off selling is currently featured in my stock. As each line died and no longer sold I moved on to something different. Only yesterday I had to collect some money from a bricks and mortar auction where I had dumped some stock that no longer sold. Yes it was very dissapointing to let it go so cheaply- but I had no alternative- and of you think ebay fees are steep try selling off line at an auction

AS for best match and stars etc, I am a tiny seller, I am almost embarrassed at the small amounts I sell through ebay , yet in some ways that does make it easier to keep on top of issues and maintain stars. I have managed to retain TRS status now for a while no doubt at some point I will lose it but I have had it for ages so it must be possible for others to do also. I don't consider myself a better or worse seller than anyone else and I have the same pool of buyers so no, we are not all suffering or struggling and not all being forced out of online selling. I am also not even slighlt put out that I can't leave negs anymore, why would I be? As a seller I much prefer being able to protect my sales a little by the 2 strikes and no bids allowed setting, and also to recover my fees on time wasters by doing the NPB. I cannot see what possible benefit being able to neg someone would have on my sales.

As a seller & buyer on Ebay, I hate the free listing promotions. Ebay just gets flooded with tat that hasn't got a cat in hells chance of selling. If this became permanent, I think it will have a detriment effect on Ebay as a lot of buyers will just think it's too much trouble to search through the flood of continuous unsold & relisted rubbish.
