I just tried my girls with Sainsburys own brand tinned cat food - salmon flavour - and they looked at me like I was mad. Cats!

Nothing tight about it, it's the right volume of food for a cat for one meal. They only have tiny stomachs and are grazers by nature so prefer to have access to food most of the day. A bowl of dried biscuits usually suffices with a couple of wet meals a day.

One pouch a day per cat is tight no matter what excuse you try to come up with.
A little grunt a little squeeze and out it comes like lemon cheese

Excuse me? I think you've possibly misunderstood. My cats have free access to a complete dried food (veterinary diet) so the wet food is their "treat" and not the only thing they eat all day :)

  • It's highly interesting that all those of you buying Whiskas/Felix also feed either Go-Cat or supermarket brand dried food. Junk food at it's best, so not only do they afflict our health but that of our pets' too!

Those in glass houses. Unless you're feeding a high-quality, grain-free wet food or raw, you're not in any position to criticise others.:)

And when I tried that it caused my cat a lot of distress due to impacted anal glands causing an acute bilateral dermatitis. She's managed perfectly well eating Royal Canin for the past 22 years and other than this paticular episode when I recently changed her diet, she's in great health.

High protein, low fibre foods are not suitable for a lot of cats and dogs and unless they have a specific reason to need a grain-free diet then there's no need to switch. There are plenty of good quality foods out there to choose from :)

Pouches are a bit of a con, at least twice the price of a tin, why not just buy a tin & keep in the fridge.
of course you all know both are only 4% meat.
My cats seem to have an in built sensor that lets them know if their food comes from a can and they then wont touch it!!

When I just had the two adult cat I put down one pouch of Whiskas every morning and a big scoop of ONE dried cat food. One of the cats would only eat the dried food so the other one scoffed the pouch and had some of the dried too. This system worked really well until four weeks ago, both cats were the right weight, they never scrapped for food and there was a little bit left over every day so they were clearly getting enough.

Then...the new kitten arrived and the routine has gone to hell in a handcart. Kitten is now 12 weeks old, growing like a weed and eats like every meal was his first for days. He doesn't like dry food much so I've had to change to tins of Whiskas as I'm filling up the bowls four times a day , he could easily eat a whole tin a day on his own. And then start on the dried. The big cats are freaking out at the empty food bowls and have started lurking nervously in the kitchen every time I set foot in it. They too are gobbling up the nosh as fast as I put it down and have started to look a bit porky. The kitten continues to look like a string bean and runs around like a maniac...

Anyway, tins of Whiskas are much cheaper than pouches and the ingredient list is praactically identical re % protein etc. It looks and smells the same and it certainly gets eaten fast enough. It's £3 for 6 x 390g tins, or the equivelent of 24 pouches. I think I'm going to stop buying pouches tbh, they're fine if you're only serving one pouch a day but with Pig Kitten here now they're too expensive.

The kitten would benefit from a higher protein food such as Nature's Menu Kitten food. It will fill him up for longer and work out much cheaper to feed, not to mention is a much healthier product than Whiskas which is akin to you & me eating McDonalds & Burger King for every meal ;)
