Really annoyed went into Aldi today and the gammon has not been reduced to £3.99 it is £4.49 and the offer has disappeared from their home page
I still got a couple though. It is only 50p but 50p counts when you are on a tight budget.
Managed to get a couple of reduced stewing steak for £1.02 a pack as well so it wasn't too bad.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Our Aldi had some small gammon joints for £2.99. They'll definitely do a "roast", cold with chips & beans; and probably some bits for something like a risotto so not too bad, it helps that there's only 2 of us rather than 4. I bought a couple and have put them in the freezer so they'll go on next month's menu plan.

We actually have one tonight but I paid £4.99 last week for it.
But it will do a meal tonight with salad and new potatoes, some will be sliced for sandwiches and some will go into a chicken and ham pie tomorrow.
Approx four meals for four people from one joint
How on earth do you manage that?
That works out around 75g (raw weight) of ham per portion, so probably nearer 50g cooked weight which would equate to half a slice.
I could comfortably feed 6-8 adults with a joint of that size as a single meal. Possibly a slice or two left over for a sandwich but certainly no more and we're not particularly big eaters.0 -
We have all got used to cheap meat, and to be quite honest we eat too much per portion. The portion size for all meat should equate to the size of a pack of playing cards
The secret is that when the meat is cooked I cut it in half first, then slice thinly (I use a meat slicer for this) then cut the other half in half and slice one lot for sarnies and dice the rest.
This way I get enough out of a large joint to make three mealsBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Butterfly Brain I salute you I too cut meat on a meat slicer. Its such a good way of getting the most from your joint.I find I like to load up on veg as well as a good source of protiens.I grew up with a Mum who could make a small amount of meat look twice the size with careful management ,mind you she had a carving knife that could have cut your arm off it was so sharp. As children we were warned never to ever touch it on pain of the heavens falling on our heads
:):)
its true we all eat far too much meat I am amazed sometimes at the plates in restraunts and often feel I could have half this amount and be full.I am with our american cousins and am all in favour of 'doggy bags ' My friend and I went to a Brewers Fayre last year (pub chain) and we had sausage and mash and three huge bangers appeared on our plates .we both looked at each other and said almost simultaneously (one's going home ) we wrapped one of these large sausages up in a serviette and took them home .I had mine the next day chopped up in a pasta . we both grew up with rationing:):) and waste not want not

Feeding 6-8 adults for dinner assuming an equal mix of men and women (total 13,500-18,000 cal/day) and assuming you're entertaining friends and not going to restrict portion sizes that would be correct but so would creating 4 balanced meals for a family of four (total 7.500 cal/day).Butterfly_Brain wrote: »We have all got used to cheap meat, and to be quite honest we eat too much per portion. You're right 3 ounces - 85 grams of raw meat is all that is required per day to get enough protein from this one source...along with other foods to make protein 100% RDA.
So...that 1.3kg joint divided by 85 grams makes 15.3 servings...very close to your 16 servings.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
