I can't help wondering though - would it work out better in the long run to buy a big bag of chickpeas and make one's own hummus.

I've seen a fat club recipe that's tinned chickpeas, fat free natural yogurt, and chosen flavour (garlic, roasted pepper/onion), blitzed.

We used tinned. But I guess even taking in to the cost of electric / gas for cooking it must be cheaper with dried chick peas ... especially if you can buy them bulk. Can never get dried ones to the same texture though.

We've also made hummus type stuff with all sorts of other beans - which ever is on offer. I think butter bean is my favourite. It seems to blitz much smoother.

Next time I'm making a batch of yogurt I might give it a go.

Any idea if it would be any good thinning it with whey if I wanted to turn my yogurt into soft cheese?
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

    Some nice ideas there Vickie.

I think vegan would be cheaper with veg oil?

That is a really good idea, cheaper and probably nicer!
  • Personally I can't stand chick peas or hummus so I tend not to do it. I can't stand coriander either it tastes like soap to me.

    But everyone has different tastes.

I know it's a little weird, but a wholemeal pitta toasted and hot, with cold hummus, hard boiled egg, and a touch of marmite.

It's the only way I like either marmite or hummus; the rest of the time I think it looks like baby poop :rotfl:

I have had a go at a vegan meal plan for two for £20 a week. I'm sure other people will be able to do much better and healthier, though! I have included split peas and mushy peas, but it's just for one week. Once stores of pasta, rice and spices have been built up, there would be more flexibility. All from Tesco:
    Ideas for meals
Breakfasts- oats with water and a blob of jam
    Teas- chilli with beans, kidney beans, mixed veg and rice; mushroom curry with curry sauce and rice; spag bol with tomatoes, onions soya and spaghetti; potato and mixed veg bake; cottage pie with soya, carrots stock cube and potatoes (stretched with oats if possible);
Dinners- split pea soup, with stock cube and curry powder + any sad looking veg, and some bread; hummus with carrot sticks and some bread; mushy pea and potato fritters; left over veg soup; left over chilli/curry with a baked potato; garlic mushrooms on toast; any remaining beans on either remaining bread or potatoes.

How much for 5kgs of potatoes:eek::eek::eek:
I get a 12.5kg sack of potatoes in Morrisons for £2.00

Hope you don't mind me butting in with a question, I'm a long time lurker and managed to get 2packs of 6 filo pastry sheets reduced to 60p a box. Any ideas what I can do with them please? I've put 1 in the freezer but I'm at a loss with what to do with this box. I was thinking of just spreading tomato puree and some peppers, mushrooms and cheese etc on 1 sheet. No idea about the rest. I've never used them before. I've plenty mushrooms, loads of potatoes and veg. No meat though, I had a freezer break down last week so loads had to be thrown :(

    Tia

Just thought, do I need all 6 sheets for one base?

  • Filo is very thin, so yes you do need six pieces for a base.

  • I make these a lot and they are cheap tasty and filling

But I make SC pastry rather than puff pastry because it only works out to 30p if you make your own. I don't use mustard seeds either

It works with left over curry as well just add potatoes and peas to bulk it out

    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/9...potato-pasties

Total cost for four .......using HM sc pastry £1.01 (25p ish each )

300g potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks 15p
    100g frozen peas 9p
    2 tsp oil 10p
    1 onion, sliced 10p
1-2 tsp curry paste (any type) I like pataks 49p a tin in B&M 20p
375g pack ready-rolled puff pastry (HM sc 30p)
    1 egg, beaten 7p

  • That sounds lovely butterfly brain. Will definitely try that, we've got a few bags of potatoes to use up that we bought reduced to 9p a bag. Thank you
