10 weeks pay, they only offer statutory redundancy pay - despite what the right wing media would have you think. Used to be more but most of us have had out terms and conditions changed back down to the minimum now.

Statutory redundancy is 10 weeks capped at £430 per week - I think even councils have not sunk this low and still pay the full wage? Allthough I do agree in principle - it isn't as generous as some people would have us think. Where I am working they are paying two weeks per year for voluntary redundancy, and have not yet had to make any compulsory redundancies - but when they do they will also be based on the statutory figures, although again, at full pay and not capped.

If you haven't yet been told that your post will definitely be redundant, then there is a whole process still to go through and that includes potential reallocation to another role.

Which will only be more difficult if you have got yourself a reputation for 'not giving another ounce of effort' and sick leave issues.

Do you have an external employee support service who you could approach for help in managing stress?

We were offered voluntary 1.5 weeks per year, not capped. I think if compulsory we get 1 week per year - don't know if it's capped because I don't earn that much per week! Most people think we get one month per year though thanks to the media! If only!

It's still rubbish to go through but RG I wouldn't go off sick as it will probably help you get another job if you haven't - but I would be very tempted I agree.

I never realised that stress was an optional afliction.

Was a pretty bad day at work today, and I think when my redundancy letter finally comes, I won't be able to hack it, and combined with my debts, think I will be off work with stress, but will go and see a Doctor.

If you are in the redundancy period, does being off "sick" affect anything please?

    :(

I sympathise. It is a horrible situation to find yourself in which unfortunately is happening more and more these days. Being made redundant is an extremely stressful and upsetting thing to go through.

By all means, go see your doctor and get their advice and help but honestly, I would strongly advise you to try and work your notice period with as good grace as you can. It will be bloody hard and you won't feel like doing it but it will be much better than having the sickness period showing up when you go for your next job. Plus, if you can stick with it, you will feel better knowing you at least held your head up, went in to work and basically stuck two fingers up to them as I suspect they will not be expecting you to do that.

Whatever happens, I hope things turn out OK for you.

This is a really good point. Also, re: sorting out the debts: when I was out of work and struggling with debts, it all got so stressful that I totally buried my head in the sand. Was only when I got back into employment and sorted my head out that I was also able to sort my debts out - there's nothing like sitting on the sofa in your pants to make you feel like everything is too difficult, if I were the OP I would not be keen to bring forward the start of the sofa/pants stage!

FYI - I have an excellent sickness record thank you. I am always there.

Then don't ruin it now. Not unless you are really really genuinely sick to the point of being incapable of working.

Now, more than ever, you need to be able to call upon that excellent sickness record - to demonstrate:

    • To your current employer that IF they are making redundancies and IF they are selecting which employees will be affected, then you are one of the ones they should be keen to retain.
    • To your council as a larger organisation that if they are redeploying employees to avoid making them redundant, then you are one of the ones worth redeploying.
    • To any prospective new employers that you are a reliable and diligent employee that they would want to employ.
As soon as you go sick, whether it be with stress or a stomach bug, you are putting all of those options at risk. A risk that, personally, I don't believe it is worth taking.

    It depends on th LA

If you are looking for any kind of re-deployment or pool for redundancy then time off work can be a factor is your scoring and re-deployment.

It can actually be positive (ie those off sick get priority for re-deployment), others use it is a negative.

And no few go off with stress because they are at risk of redundancy, if debts are your stress then finding work ASAP or keeping the one you have would be the priority.
