From where to where and how much and with what amount of luggage?

Random flights are no use to me.

It was from Edinburgh. I can't remember the date I picked, but I think it was a Friday some time next month.

That is why I asked when you are flying??

I don't fly on the same day a cruise departs. Far too stressful.

I arrive the day before and spend a night at or close to the departure port. Much more relaxing and an extra day of holiday to boot in places like Rome, Barcelona, Malaga etc

I have been on numerous cruises and the ship has never sailed without a late linked flight arrival. It has sailed without baggage, and this was couriered to the next port of call. I am not saying it doesn't ever happen, but it is far more likely to wait than sail.

We're arguing the same point Poet! The cruise lines can sail without passengers, even those who fly with them, but don't do it often.

It does happen though: I've got a recollection of a drama with a P&O (maybe?) cruise a couple of years ago where a plane was delayed and the cruiseline sailed without 100+ passengers and bussed them down the length of Italy or similar. Those passengers had booked flights through P&O.

Anyway the point it moot now, the OP has moved on to other options it seems.

Lots of 'cruise' and then 'stays' knocking about.
But doing the stay before the cruise is much better, and takes away any worry about flight delays.
The cruise is normally much better than the stay anyway, so save the best until last.

I checked out train tickets from my nearest station to Southampton

Approx £400 each return, and that is with a senior rail card.
Not sure where you are in Scotland. Aberdeen - Southampton off peak return is just over £100 for random dates in October with a railcard.

The particular question about flight times was about a Thomson fly cruise,

They do things diffently to the regular cruiseline.

£400 for the train probably means you are not looking at all the offers

As for options give a date and start location, Southampton travel options can be looked at allthough I suspect a EUropean flight will be more practical.

Of course you could also look to see if there are any other cruises sailing from a port either near you, or at least closer to you. such as Greenock, Rosyth or Newcastle. Remember you don't have to faff about with airport restrictions such as what is in your hand luggage or weight allowance if you sail out of a British port.
    Just a thought!
