    Sorry to jump in on this thread but on a similar note.
    My LG TV is only about 20 months old bought from a high st store without extended warranty, a thin green line as appeared running down the screen. I will be calling into the store today, What is the correct terminology to use when confronting the customer service team regarding sale of goods act etc. Many thanks.

    First of all, you shouldn't be confronting anyone. As a first step you need to ask what their policy is and what they can do for you.

    Bearing in mind that the onus is on you to produce an independent report, go from there.

    It would all come down to what was the cause of the fault and whether a court believes that 60 months is a reasonable time frame for a TV to last.

    The 'hot spicy electrical retailer' will say that as it's been 5 years it isn't covered by SOGA - Either way you will need an engineer's report done (always get an independant report and never pay for their engineer to do it) and that will say what the cause of the problem is. If it is a manufacturing defect (basically anything that was unavoidable and not your fault) then you can show that to the shop who will probably still say that it falls outside the 'reasonable' time frame of SOGA and you will have to take them to court and hope that the judge sides with you...

    Personally I feel that 60 months is a reasonable if slightly short life span and the best thing to do is replace it with whatever you can afford..
    Swagbucks:
    2012 = £225 (august onwards)
    2013 = £400 so far...

    It hasn't been 5 years for this person, they 'hijacked' the thread a little with their own problem "My LG TV is only about 20 months old bought from a high st store without extended warranty,"

    Sony's tagline is pretty much "looks ok" now. I'd put samsung above sony these days, but neither have very good colour quality.

    The ET5 I mentioned is cheaper than the HX723

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-TX-L32ET5B-32-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B0079WKGJC/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1346230859&sr=1-4

    and when running a scrolling test pattern through the sony sets at work, even the supposed 400hz motionflow sets were jerky as hell, while the ET5 was smooth, and the samsung 6540 (the closest model, but far more expensive) was NEARLY as smooth.

    Seriously, do not get sony.

    I know - I wasn't responding to that as it had already been dealt with but continuing the original conversation. Sorry if it was misleading

    That "Spicy Retailer" will offer a chargeable service in store amerste, you need to phone 0844 561 1234 option 3 and option 3 again I believe and read up on the sticky at the top of this forum first.

    To the original poster, I believe you may be out of luck as a TV brought 5 years ago for £400 is quite reasonable, consider replacing.

    I can take Martin Lewis, handbags at dawn!
  • I'm going to get a new TV soon, should I take out the extended 5 years warranty or shall I just leave it under SOGA?
