Returning a TV for repair

What did you buy? Samsung LE32R87BDX

When did you buy it? 27/09/2007

Where from? (internet or in store - it DOES make a difference) www.247electrical.co.uk

How did you pay? (cash/cheque/debit card/credit card etc) Can't remember, debit or credit card.

What went wrong? Hi

I have got a Samsung LE32R87BDX which i've had for almost 5 years.

The other day all of a sudden the picture isn't very clear i.e. there's too much colour, contrast , dark and almost like a negative image. I have adjusted all the picture settings and also reset it to the factory settings. In addition, I have checked all input sources - ps3, satellite, tried a different HDMI cable. So it occurs no matter what input source I use. Even tried a scart connection...in conclsusion there is something wrong with the TV.

After doing some googling, it appears to be a common fault.

The warrenty covers about 3 years, where do I stand in my case in accordance to the Sales of good act 1979? I still have the online invoice.

What are the vendors telling you? Not contacted them yet.

What solution or remedy are you looking for? (Companies may Repair / Refund / Replace) I really want a repair and can't afford to buy another TV.

  • The only way to get anything under the SOGA means that you would need to provide proof that the fault was due to a manufacturing defect (an inherrent fault), which after having a television that worked for 5 years is going to be a very hard job.

    Don't forget that whilst the the SOGA gives you up to 6 years to try to claim for faulty or non durable goods, this doesn't mean that all goods must last 6 years.

    Even if the retailer did agree to do something, they can choose the remedy, and I wouldn't be surprised to find that they decided to refund.
    This refund doesn't need to be the full amount that you paid as they can make a deduction to cover the use you have had from the TV.
    If they think that 6 years is the normal life of this particular model then as you will have had 5/6 trouble free use, they may only offer a refund of 1/6 of the price that you paid.

    Personally I think that 5 years is a reasonable length of time for a TV to last, you would hope that it might last longer and some people have TVs for decades and all. But I think that you would be hard pressed to force a repair under SOGA after 60 months... Speak to the website and see what they say, you may need to get an engineers report to confront them with if they refuse.

    EDIT - What Shaun said....
    Swagbucks:
    2012 = £225 (august onwards)
    2013 = £400 so far...

    I have to agree that five years sounds reasonable for a tv, you can pick up an LED 32" for £249-£299 now or an LCD for a lot less.

    Of course it does depend on how much use it's had as to whether it's lasted a reasonable time. If it's turned on for most of the day it wouldn't be expected to last as long as a TV in a spare room used once a month so you do have to think about how often you have it on and how long it's on for. Even just two hours a day for five years is over 3500 hours of use
  • How much did you pay for it?

    I think you'll be out of luck on this one. I'd expect a TV to last about this amount of time.

    Thanks for your information.

    I've bought the TV for £461.55 back in 2007.

    Time to buy a new TV I think.
  • It certainly wouldn't do any harm to try a local repair man if you can find one who will give a free estimate.

    As you say that you found it to be a fairly common fault, it might be a fairly cheap and easy repair.

    Yeh, I was thinking about that. If it doesn't cost too much.

    Worst comes to worst - I'll buy another TV, those new smart TVs look tempting :cool2:

    Thanks for your replies.

    If you do get a new tv, get one of these: http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/panasonic/txp42st50b/pana-txp42st50b

    They're amazing. I bought one the other week, and I sell TVs for a living so I'm very fussy, and to top it off, my place of work doesn't even sell these...yup they're that good I bought it without staff discount.
