The worst thing i saw that they cooked was a loaf. A couple of weeks ago they had someone who had grown up during the war in Germany and they were even worse off than us. They baked a black loaf that was made mostly out of grass.
That was pretty awful - but it didn't look much different to German pumpernickel bread and about as edible!0 -

I have really, really enjoyed this series so much. Ruth Goodman is so knowledgeable with aspects of household management regardless of the era. I have loved all of the versions they have done, Victoria, Edwardian and Wartime Farm.
They did a spin off with the Pharmacy which was really interesting as well - if you are into how pharmasists sometimes poisoned unsuspecting punters!!Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money
