isn't malwarebytes pro with real-time scanning turned off just malwarebytes free?

I know you say you want automatic updating but malwarebytes free automatically updates when you open it, and if you are not going to be running malwarebytes pro all the time (why would you if you have real-time turned off) then it will only update when you start it anyway.

No it doesn't; only the PRO version automatically updates

no my free version when I open the program runs the update box and updates without me doing anything, the pro version has settings for real-time updates but I question the point if it's not running all the time esp. if real-time scanner is disabled
I can't actually think of a reason why you would want malwarebytes running constantly always updating if real-time scanner is disabled.

is malwarebytes your only anti-malware? if not and you have something else with a real-time scanner why do you even need more than malwarebytes free?

The free version doesn't by design update when you open the program.
Updates are done manually through the Update tab > check for updates button.

...the whole point of the pro version over the free version though is protection through prevention.

Scanning/removing after an infection isn't protection.

even when real-time protection is disabled? how can it prevent infection when it's not looking?

when I open malwarebytes it updates automatically, it even sometimes says: 'Database is x days old update now?' but I don't use malwarebytes as my full-time anti-malware just for the odd scan so it would be pointless for it to run and update in real-time for me, you're not supposed to have two real-time anti-malware programs running at once.
  • In the free version of MB, the 'Settings' tab allows a warning to be enabled if the definitions are out of date by selectable number of days (1 - 28).

If enabled, a pop-up dialog is generated on opening the program prompting a manual update.

I just don't see the point of having it continuously updating if your only going to be using it for manual scans (since you want to turn off real-time protection)

if you want the program auto updating all the time then you may as well have real time scanning turned on as well because 'prevention is better than the cure', or just have malwarebytes free and set the 'database old' dialogue to one day so it will update in one click, in addition to another anti-malware providing the real-time protection

IMO the best thing about malwarebytes free is the fact it's an on-demand scanner that compliments your real-time anti-malware, yet doesn't run at all (therefore can't interfere with your main anti-malware) until you want it to, if you use malwarebytes pro for your real-time scanner I don't know if there is another product that would be as good as malwarebytes as an on-demand scanner for added peace of mind.

The fact that you you don't understand, or agree with the way I choose to use to use the software on my computer doesn't make it any the less valid.

If you read my previous posts you will see that I don't just use Malwarebytes for scanning but use the right-click content menu at least half a dozen times a day to check the quality of all items I recover from Sandboxie.

With PRO I can set it to update hourly so I don't have to manually update every time I download something from the internet.

I have no problem with real-time scanning. If you refer to my original past you will see that my concern was with its reported high RAM usage.

I totally agree. An excellent product which is why I don't mind chipping in a few bob for the PRO version to support the continuation of the product.

Incidentally I upgraded to PRO a couple hours ago and haven't so far noticed any sign of system drag despite it utilising around 110 Mb of RAM.
