We were both standing anyway. I mentioned age, because I am a bit old fashioned, and if an older family member has always been helpful and courteous in the past then younger family members should respect that.
This couple have no respect for anyone, and I have the opinion that when in my house, people play by my rules - be polite and do not wind me up or threaten me. I guess many other people would agree with me on this.

I'm confused as to the point of the thread, in the OP you asked where you would have stood if you had given it everything. That to me is asking about the legal position not for moral support?

At one point, I thought that her husband may try his luck and attack me, and I was prepared to basically give it everything - so, if this had happened, where would I have stood?
I am 54 and the relation is 30.

The strange thing is, that they think of themselves as "upper class", and look down on us (mainly because I have health problems, and have been unemployed a lot over the past ten years).

They sound like that Hyacinth Bucket character. Tad barmy with dillusions of grandeur.

Shame on them for having no social graces or understanding of basic etiquette. No one with any class would scream and shout in the street. They behaved like alley cats.

I think they have a nerve to look down on you due to your health problems. Really who are they to judge.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

How would I deal with verbal abuse in my own home? I would politely ask them to leave - and that would be that until such time as I receive an apology!
