Just realised that Tete's diary is supposed to be about not procrastinating and I'm talking about Dexter rather than editing an article and we're discussing ways of watching TV programmes back-to-back :o

Ooops! Then ignore everything I said :o They have made that process a lot tougher! I'll be quiet!

I thought as much. Tougher process and hugely inflated fees - just my luck to take 8 years to decide I want to do this! :o

I became a university administrator after losing my job last Dec, and the new post I started last week is PA to the Head of Humanities. Not what I really had planned for my life to be honest but I like it well enough and was honestly just glad to find something permanent. Although when I first started dealing with academics it was an eye-opener, some of them honestly wouldn't last 5 minutes in a 'normal' job.

Too true - half are nice, the other half are complete a-holes.

Your boss sounds like a delight Ruby! Hope you looked very smug when you showed her that you hadn't screwed up! ;)

    Ditto! :D

Good morning, sorry for the quietness, I've been a bit in limbo with the move and home internet has gone off AGAIN - fingers crossed it'll be on for the weekend.

I'm now safely ensconced in my new office and I have to say I'm enjoying the windows after 5 years in a glorifed broom cupboard. We now have huge floor-to-ceiling windows with a lovely view over the east coast main line.

The furniture wasn't arranged as we specified meaning I have a desk with my back to my manager (so updates and chat during the day may be limited!) ... and with that, everyone has arrived so I'd better sign off :(

    Can you re-arrange the desks?

First thing I did when we moved offices in Dec - I wanted to be safely back in a corner again!

Oh she really is...had my 3 month review with her and it wasn't really a review, just telling me what her and the other 2 had discussed about splitting my time between the 2 projects within our team. She didn't even tell me if she was pleased with me or not!

Your new office sounds really nice Tete, although the desk arrangement doesn't. I have a similar situation, although it's the entire rest of the office floor that can see what I'm doing! I don't care though because if anyone said anything I would tell them; I've done all the work I need to/can do and it's not my fault that there isn't more! That being said, I'm on my own this morning so will be spending most of it in the filing room so I don't have to answer the phone (I HATE SPEAKING ON THE PHONE!)

  • I don't mind speaking on the phone Ruby I just hate being interrupted all the time! It's been brilliant the last couple of days as my phone hasn't been conected, but we have these schmancy new ones that are connected to our emails, so we get a message every time we miss a call. As if I'm going to call them back! My boss actually asked me to put my personal mobile number on my out of office! I was like 'Oh OK' but there's NO WAY the students are getting my mobile number - they'll be ringing me all times of the day, night and weekend!

These are temporary desks Beccie, we'll rearrange when the new ones arrive in a couple of weeks (why they couldn't leave us in our old office til then I have no idea - typical). Hoping that my boss won't be here too much anyway, she's normally quite 'absent' anyway and is keeping on her old office too. No doubt she'll want to stick around for the first couple of weeks though to show how 'happy' she is to be here.

I'm quite relieved with the commute so far - even though it's a lot further, because it's on main A roads it's only about 5-10 minutes longer (thus far), although there is a lot more merging and stressful driving.

I'm wanting to devise some sort of spread sheet to track petrol spends and claims but not too sure what/how to record it - anyone else record this kind of info?

In my old job somehow one of our other offices got hold of my mobile number (still not entirely sure how!) and I got a phone call about something stupid on a day off. I made it perfectly clear that I wasn't at work and couldn't help, then went mad at the bosses and told them that the only time it was acceptable to give my personal contact information out to people was if they were going to start paying me to be on-call. They quickly removed the number from their contact list! ;) If I were you I'd put your boss's number on your out of office! :)

The best thing about my job is the lack of phone calls. I get about 10 a week and 9 of them are recorded messages about PPI! :rotfl: Makes such a nice difference to my old job where I could get 60-70 calls a day!

Glad the bad desk arrangement is only temporary, and it's good that the commute doesn't seem that bad!

No idea about the spreadsheet to track petrol and mileage and such. I'm sure if you PM NIM he'll have something for that up his sleeve! :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

  • Yeah I was thinking NIM or Poolie! I'm making a point of not doing over 60mph anyway to try and minimise costs.

Really hoping the internet is fixed at home this weekend as I could really do with doing some research etc. Also getting very concerned that another week has gone by and I haven't managed to sort any work experience yet  Weeks just fly by though - work is so busy and them I'm exhausted by the time I get home :(

Anyway, if I can't get on to update hope you have a lovely weekend!

Hiya Tete, lemme know exactly what ya need it for and I'll throw something together for you in excel, its by far the best spreadsheet program I've ever used. One of the few bits of software i'd ever buy.
This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.
