This is exactly what every retail shop goes through with credit card fraud. They get lumped with a chargeback - plus a 'handling fee/fine'. Welcome to the world of retail.

I know this is off topic but it follows on from your post.

My local little computer shop went out of business due to fraud.

They sold about £18,000 worth of computer hardware on a credit card. They took all the obvious precautions, contacting the credit card for approval etc.

About 6 months afterwards the CC company did a charge back as the card was fraudulent.

I only have one side of the story so maybe there was more to it but I have heard many stories of charge backs long after an “approved” sale.

remember in the Paypal 'rules' they can chargebac up to 90 days after a transaction so you have to keep your Special Delivery receipts for that length of time

Another scam I found out about is where someone pays by paypal then collects the goods eg bulky stuff. Because you haven't POSTED it via a trackable method, you will NOT be covered by Paypal should a chargeback be initiated.

Good luck with the police. Mine took a few weeks to go round but they were all very helpful. I expected that of Devon and Cornwall as they are not tooooo busy round here but not so much of the Metropolitan police but they exceeded my expectations.

That's why you shouldn't accept PayPal for items that are collection only.

Which makes me suspect many of the PS3s bought with paypal, then collected, are going to suffer this fate.

On another note, we are all aware that if a deal goes wrong, and its paid with a credit card, then a chargeback on the credit card can be done. Wonder what would happen if you had a paypal credit card. Could you see them issueing a chargeback against paypal :rotfl:

Hi most of the times paypal will not cover you for anything.

    1) If you send something to an unconfirmed address, the buyer has 6 months to report a problem and make a chargeback.

    2) Even if you send to a confirmed address with special delivery/courier service it doesnt mean anything. If you read the small print paypal only guarantee with confirmed address if:

"You can provide a signature next to the persons address"

Now if you have ever used special delivery or any courier service non provide both the address and signature. Usually they provide confirmation saying that the item was delivered in "Lancashire" and received by "Stevens" or whatever name they can make out.

Best way to deal with paypal is to be overly cautious to the point of being paranoid.

Make sure the buyer has good feedback, been registered for a while, confirmed with paypal. Even then email the buyer asking for their phone number so you can talk to them on the phone before sending out an expensive item. Also try not to send to a non private address such as a work address. The most important thing has to be if in doubt dont send it.

Even if you take all the precaution you can, you can still be stung as fraudsters are clever and always looking for new ways to con people.

Yes, however retail shops factor in their losses to shoplifting and credit card fraud and add it to their margins. If you're just selling one item then you can't do that - or if you're selling items on auction. But then it seems that eBay don't really want to be an auction site any more, they'd rather be Amazon - or that's what pretty much all their changes over the last year or so would lead you to believe.

Of course, Paypal could do exactly the same - but they'd rather screw the little guys over for as much as possible rather than actually do anything serious about the fraud problem.

i sold a wii yesterday to a private buyer who then paid with verified account.
he arranged tracked shipping with dhl they have picked it up and its on its way when it arrives i will have tracked proof that it arrived at the address verified on paypal.
does this cover me and the buyer completely?
my account will not be verified until next week.
i have no reason to suspect anything dodgy but after reading this thread it makes you wonder.
    thanks ragjoy.

yes confirmed address and a verified account.
i thought if an account was verified that also meant the address was confirmed.
