hi, i know a few things can be done to improve google ranking. I want to help my mother in law who runs a small b&b to get her site more visible. I have noticed a few things - changed the website title - from just the b&b name to a bit (i think)better one, i have also added a few tags in the footer. Is there anything else simple i can do to improve the ranking so the site appears on the (ideally) first page? The site has been live for a couple of years, i have google ads running, and a few back links, but still i am not an expert. The link is on my profile i am not sure if i can just post it here? thanks very much!

Problem is *everyone* wants to be on the first page of google results, so *everyone* is doing what you wan to do. When you're competing with hundreds of thousands for one of 10 spaces, things aren't easy.

Frankly if the site is straightforward about what is on offer, where etc., people will find it (eg assuming it says 'Bed and breakfast in Devon' then people stand a chance of finding it organically). If you pay someone to SEO your site, they cannot guarantee results beyond paid links (otherwise every search put on google would find mucky sites which is what happened in the olden days).

Be aware what *you* see on Google isn't what everyone else sees as well, so what ranks highly for you may not for someone else - results are personalised to sites you 'trust' ranking higher - my sites rank high for me, middle of the deck for other people, unless they add enough detail about what they want to find me!

Google are wanting to bring more social into search results, start will be to setup a Google+ page for the B&B and regularly post to it (ie weekly) post on anything touristy like events, attractions.

    It costs.

You can make sure that the right key words show up in the searches.

My son knows more about this and google analytics as it's his job.

Here are a couple of things:

    1) Make sure your title is what you want people to look for - Example:

instead of Bed & Breakfast only, add a prefix and suffix:

How much is a Cheap, Affordable, Twin Room, Bed & Breakfast in London From £20 Per Night

What you are trying to do here is put keywords into the title that can be broken down into smaller searches. I.e. someone searching for the following might find you (with the above title in place):

How much is a Twin Room, Bed & Breakfast in London?

How much is a Bed & Breakfast in London?

Affordable Bed & Breakfast in London

Twin Room, Bed & Breakfast in London From £20 Per Night

And so on.......you do the same with file names. Instead of Page1.html or ContactUs.html you could use contact_us_at_shelias_bed_and_breakfast_in_london.html for example. Your prices page could be cheap_affordable_bed_and_breakfast_in_london.html

    2) It really depends what you are promoting. What are your unique selling points. Are you five star? Do you cater for families? Do you have free parking? What are the facilities and sightseeing attractions around your area? What is your niche market? Do you cater for people with special needs (i.e. wheelchair access)? Do you have wi-fi access in a remote town? Do you do special coach trips for the sightseeing customers? Promote all these points in your content - Content is king on the internet.....the more pages with quality content you have the better.

    3) Advertise in all the free classifieds - Do a search on google for "Free Classifieds" and "Free Classifieds in *your town's name".

    4) Google "Bed and breakfast" and follow the links on the first page. You want to see what your competition are doing, how they use their words, how they promote themselves. When you have done that google their business name to see where they have advertised on the internet and then advertise in the same places as them.

    5) Look at their source code (page source) to see what keywords they use.

Look offline at the yellow pages - copy promotional keywords and service keywords from the big (and small) advertisers.

Put £4 extra on the customer's overall cost of your weekly b&b and then plough that £4 extra into buying the customer a free drink at the local pub on a friday - Advertise it as "Every Friday we take you to the local pub for a free drink!". In other words, take a quid or two out of your profits if need be and spend it on a free drink.....the local pub will like the extra custom and might advertise your b&b....if they are not doing b&b themselves of course!!

    1) What are your keywords your targeting?

    2) What is your competition online looking like? SEO is after all a relative consideration

    a) Clean up the HTML, you want as little tags and nesting etc as possible

    b) Review the copy, ensure it is keyword rich

    c) Review the HTML, ensure headers, alt tags etc are keyword rich, ensure page filenames are keyword rich etc

    d) If you decide to change the structure of the site ensure you 301 redirect the old URLs to the new

    e) Most importantly of all, you need to get inbound links to different pages of your site. The more important and relevant the sites they come from the better their impact will be
