If it's quiet and someone I know, I'll quite happily stand there and talk if I have time.
If it's busy/I don't know the person, one will keep their trap zipped.

In the grand scheme of things does a 30 second chat really matter, you should just chill out and stop being so highly strung! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I do make a little smalltalk while the cashier is scanning my stuff and I'm packing it, they are people not robots and don't deserve shoppers ignoring them! But it's a bit of polite chat about the weather etc., not a full-on conversation while others are waiting to get their stuff paid for and get home!
And I do try to take notice of if the cashier is in a grump or bored silly, and stop talking.Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.0 -
Not just the checkouts but customers do stand in the most awkward places to have a 10 minute chat, why not arrange to chat over a coffee or a meal rather than a supermarket.0

Most checkout assistants are now forced to chat with customers with mystery shopper checks to ensure they are talking to them, the days of actually watching productivity (how many items are scanned and how quickly) are long gone. Speed through tills isnt as big an issue as it used to be. ASDA do this, also the thanks for waiting instead of sorry about the wait comments if you have waited and if you ask a shop floor member of staff for an item they're supposed to make small talk with you on the way to show you where it is they might not want to they just don't have a choice so spare a thought for the cashier whilst the customers are telling someone on till their life story.0

I don't mind people having a quick chat, passing the time of day. What annoys me is when someone shoots off to find something they have forgotten.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
We do it to prevent US overhearing the conversation between two checkout staff (MALE OR FEMALE) which always always consists of "Hi, haven't seen you for ages, what time you on til?" "10" "oh poor you I am off at 8"You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

Most annoying is when someone spends 30 seconds putting their purse away and packing the item they've bought carefully into their handbag, all still at the cashier's desk.
DO IT SOMEWHERE ELSE, LET ME BUY MY STUFF!0 -
Dont forget the women who also wait until everything has been scanned, told the price, then start looking for their money off vouchers and their purse, credit card etc.:cool:Jojo_the_Tightfisted wrote: »Solution: use the selfscan machine. In the grand scheme of things does a 30 second chat really matter, you should just chill out and stop being so highly strung!A Bast**d I May Be !
