I have the same 15 day letter but it doesn't mention the cancellation charge.

It just says they will extend the fixed saver 2 rates until the transfer is complete.

Very tempted to switch to Scottish Power but don't want to be charged £50 by EDF for leaving a few weeks early.

Gambler/OP & Anyone else impacted....I am also on the EDF Fixed Saver V2 account and am switching over to Scottish Power fixed rate deal that expires on 1/11/2013. I started the switchover last Tuesday.

I sent an email to the EDF CEO requesting whether I would be charged early cancellation fees. I then got a phone call from a very helpful lady from the Exec Customer Support Team to advise me :

    1. There would be early cancellation fees for both gas and electric.

    2. As a gesture of good will, she would keep an eye on my account and if early cancellation fees were applied to my account, she would refund the amounts back to me so in effect, I won't be charged anything.

    3. I will stay on the V2 prices if the transfer happens after 30/9/12.

She has also put the above in writing to me so I am very happy.

Maybe worth people trying the above and see what happens. It worked for me.

    HTHs and good luck.

I spoke to EDF last week re changing supply to EDF once my BG cap expired 30th Sept 2012 . Saying can i sign up now but not change until 30th Sept . Usual xx weeks to go through but then the EDF guy checked my BG tariff on his machine and said it had no penalty charges .
Based on that and the current price rises i signed up today with 4 weeks to go on my BG contract . If BG did try to levy cancellation fees i would escalate it above the normal complaints dept as they have increased the charges and i am only giving reasonable time for the changeover .

Suggest you email both BG and EDF to record your conversation with the EDF guy in writing. I would send your emails directly to the CEOs of the two companies but that is your decision.

If you are then charged cancellation fess, you can use these emails as evidence and insist on a refund.

    HTHs.

The switch date isn't 4-6 weeks.

4-6 weeks was the old Ofgem guidance to customers but there is now a set timeframe of 21 days after the colling off period ends. ...

So 5 weeks after allowing for the typical 2 week cooling off period

But it can still be as early as 4 weeks if the supplier acts promptly ...

14 days cooling off period before they tell your old supplier, 14 days laster transfer
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • My current tariffs end on 30th September - today I was categorically assured by the Scottish Power guy that yesterday's new customers were getting transfer dates of 4th September, and that there was no chance that my transfer date would be any earlier. I made him repeat that statement several times.

I then spoke to Npower, and the lady was adamant that there is no way any energy supplier could guarantee the statement that the Scottish Power guy had made - she insisted that there is a possibility that the transfer could take place in as little as four weeks.

I have taken a gamble, and gone with Scottish Power because I think their fixed price tariffs will disappear any time now - I just hope that they have a recording of the sales pitch, so that I can claim a refund if my present supplier charges me for early termination

    Do you mean 4th October?

I'm not sure what to do. The increased £70 cashback ends at midnight tonight.

Yep, sorry, I meant 4th October!

The Fixed Price 2013 seems to have disappeared already from the comparison sites, but it is/was still available direct from Scottish Power.

The fixed price 2014 is more expensive, but if there is a £70 cashback still available, then I would take the risk.

    Live dangerously!

Thanks for this. Cashback is via the comparison sites so I may just stay with EDF after all.

I have to say that I wasn't particularly impressed with the comparison sites. They were useful to get a general idea of what is available, but when I tried to call MoneySuperMarket this morning their phone lines were switched off.

Scottish Power's 2014 fix was still available earlier today, so check the websites again now - I was only interested in the 2013 fix, and yesterday I could have got a cashback, but today it was nowhere to be found, except at Scottish Power themselves (with no cashback)
