While some sellers may do that - good customer service and all that - if the difference is significant they may feel they lose out too much to be able to do anything other than refund you.

For example, Amazon will send you out a new Kindle for free within the first year even if it is your fault the first one broke (and they will even replace replacements for free too). But when my iPod nano went faulty three months into its life, and I thought seriously about buying a Classic instead (it would have been about £40 more expensive but for the volume and perhaps slightly more reliability), they told me that after three months it was a repair/replacement or nothing. So I just had to get the nano replaced (as they could do nothing with the fault mine had developed) and put up with it, and in fact there has been no more issues with it.

So - it is up to the seller what they do.

English is not my first language, so I do literally take what is written as what is meant.

And actually I would not expect them to replace like for like, so please don't try and tell me what I would expect

If they were willing to exchange though I would definitely expect like for like. The worrying thing for me when my first Kindle broke was that they had just discontinued the model I had and may have replaced it with a smaller one or ask me to pay extra to get the 3G 'keyboard' version (I have a wi-fi only 'keyboard'). They actually had stock of the wi-fi keyboard even when I was having to replace the replacement a couple of months later.

It would be a bit galling for a buyer tbh to be expected to accept an exchange for a cheaper model.

Oh my goodness. You really don't get it.

You can 'ask' for whatever you like.

The seller is not obliged to give anything other than a refund.

Whatever the seller has on sale at the time of this offer, is completely irrelevant.

Unless you can convince the seller to swap it isn't going to happen.

Which the seller is entitled not to offer; likewise, they are entitled to offer a repair or replacement to customers who want their money back after a certain period of time.

I think you are going to have to accept that in this case the seller is simply not obliged to offer you what you want. I would be happy to get my money back; if all that is wrong is the zip pull then you have to ask yourself whether it is worth the hassle anyway.

Put a snazzy key-fob on it and call it a customised item.

I don't read the OP as the seller giving a 'cheaper model'. I read it that the 'like for like' item is now much more expensive, so an exchange isn't being offered on this item.

OK - I misinterpreted your posting above - I thought you were talking in general.

As a seller i would not care about the extra price.

But if you have returned one - they probably feel you may return the replacement - so would rather refund you.
