If you are planning on visting The Coliseum there are usually very large queues for tickets, instead get you tickets round the corner at The Roman Forum as they are also valid in The Coliseum.

You also get discount if you prove you are an EU resident.

I would love to go back! Best city break I've ever done. Easy to get around, loads of places to visit, great food, friendly people. Granted not cheap but then I'm sure if you tried it could be acheived on a budget.

fantastic place to visit, absolutely loved the Trevi Fountain - go in the eve if you can, absolutely beautiful. Transport system is great, very easy to use, but agree with others - air con a must and booking in advance for attractions that you definitely want to see.
Saw 2 victims of pickpocketing in the 4 days i was there, just be aware of it around the busy tourist attractions and be wary of mopeds with passengers - apparently, its a common thing for the passenger to swipe handbags while the rider races away.
We booked cheap flights and 3 star hotel seperately, about 250GBP for 2 adults, approx 3 years ago - HTH x

    That's rubbish.

Rome is beautiful, compact, no more expensive than London with better food, fewer beggers and better weather.

We weren't hassled at all and we went to all of the main tourist places and a few off the beaten track.

I disagree too, I was tripped over near the Spanish steps by an old lady who pretended to help pick me up whilst rifling inside my pockets. I was on the underground going to the Vatican and 6 children who looked like they were under 10yrs old suddenly ran on and tried grabbing anything that they could, my husband grabbed two of them and chucked them off the train.
Fortunately I had gone prepared to have my pockets picked and there was nothing for them to take on both occasions. I passed numerous street beggars, I even spotted one pricking the underside of their tongue with a pin to make it bleed!!

I spent 1 day in Barcelona and got mugged, a week in Rome and nothing. Everyones experiences are different and like any large city or touristy area you need to be alert and sensible. It could happen anywhere here just the same.

Plenty of pickpockets (children and women with young babies) very expensive and the scooter riders are nuts also very noisy if staying in a city centre hotel. Beautiful city well worth a visit especially if, like we did, get to see the Pope in Vatican square even though we're not particularly religious.

I wasn't intending on putting you off :)
Just disagreeing with the post that I replied to.

I have been to Barcelona and was a lot more wary when I was in Rome. We stayed on the Via Veneto and enjoyed Rome itself, just be super wary.

    Pickpockets

The women with babies throw them at you whilst the young children pick your pockets, babies are on straps so if you don't catch them no problem. The children also prod you with a rolled up newspapaper with their hand inside as soon as you go to push the paper away you have been robbed. In Italy Women with young babies can't remain detained by the Police so are allowed to go free. Not sure if the law has changed over the last few years but this certainly was the case. Most pickpockets seem to gather outside churches as this is where the majority of tourists congregate.
