Taken a fair few city breaks abroad in our time but neither of us have been to Rome.
Actually neither of us have been to Italy.
Any thoughts on Rome?

its lovely, expensive, well served by a decent metro system, just mind the pickpockets, and if you go anywhere near the "main" sights you will be hassled from all sides by people insisting you buy something from them.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0

One of my fave cities in Europe after Amsterdam. Great architecture, museums and culture. A bit pricey but who cares, it is Rome.0

stunning - even for one who is not especially interested in museums or history or old buildings, you cannot fail to be impressed. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

Wonderful, wonderful city. And small enough that most of the headline sights can be reached on foot.
My main tip if you visit in the summer, though, is to make sure you book a hotel with air-conditioning.
Much as I love Rome, there have been days when the highlight has been to get back to the air-conditioned hotel, and off of the sweltering streets.0 -
Been to rome 6 times and love it . Use public transport to get around and research where you want to go as so much to see.TOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0

No free tourist maps though.
We bought one from a newsagents for 3 euros, proved well worth it.
Lots of touts for tours, but easy to ignore.
Long queues at touirst attractions, pre book if you can.
We just went for two days, it's enough to see the outside of most place, but no time to see much inside. Leaves you with sore feet as well.0 -

That's rubbish.
Rome is beautiful, compact, no more expensive than London with better food, fewer beggers and better weather.
We weren't hassled at all and we went to all of the main tourist places and a few off the beaten track.
I have been to many places and my favourite place on the planet (so far) is inside the Pantheon.
Just don't go in August, it will be too hot."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
All sounds very positive! Agree with you about aircon - it's a mistake you only make the once!0
