Cheap decent accomodation in New York??

Hi!

Me and the OH have booked up to go to New York for a week at the end of the year :T :T :T

So far total cost is minimal - flights were booked using Virgin air miles gained through my work (and the use of my Virgin credit card). I'm going to book one night in the Times Square Marriott - again using points earned through work :j

However, I'm finding it tough looking for a reasonably priced hotel for the other 6 nights! There are so many to choose from - and prices can be utterly ridiculous!

The last time I went I stayed in the pan am hotel in Queens, which was reasonably priced, large rooms and clean... however, this time I fancy staying in Manhattan for the whole time!

So can any of you fab moneysavers recommend me a cheap, nice hotel to stay in??

Many thanks in advance :D

2p off is still 2p off!
  • I would recommend the Big Apple Hostel, if you don't mind staying a hostel...

    http://www.bigapplehostel.com/

We had a private room and it was excellent, not really hostel like, new towels every day etc.

It was a shared bathroom, there were 2 bathrooms between 4 rooms (2 private rooms & 2 with bunk beds (4 people in a bunk-bed room)), but we didn't have to wait for the bathroom & it was really clean.

    Fantastic location too.

Hi chivas, I am having the same problem, although I am going on my own at the end of April. I don't mind staying off Manhattan Island so could you tell me more about this cheap hotel in Queens, do you have a link? Was it near a tube/rail station? Thanks

Try https://www.priceline.com you can bid for a class of hotel and choose area but name of hotel is not revealed until booked, th site claims around a 50% discount can be had doing this, you choose hotel catagory and area and enter a reasonable price you are prepared to pay per night, you are guarenteed chosen area and at least the catagory if your price is accepted.

I haven't used it, but friends have recommended it as good value.

Consider staying in brooklyn too, prices can be cheaper and manhatton is easily and quickly accessible via the subway, brooklyn offers some great views of the manhatton skyline and is infact a lovely area that would otherwise be missed.

There is a Ramada Plaza at Queens which I stayed at. Close to subway and the Shea stadium and about 25 mins to Manhattan. Also they will collect you from the airport (the one closest to the hotel, I forget which it is now) and return you to the airport at the end of your visit. I paid about £80 per night B&B via Expedia, about 18 months ago.

By the way. The late Louis Armstrong lived in Queens, within walking distance from the hotel. You can tour his house, which is fairly modest. If you're interested in him that is!
