Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I have one of these ordered, as did my mum, but she went to look at it in PC World and wasn't impressed. Would this be any good for a 9 year old? She would basically use it for playing dress up/do your hair/ temple run type games, watching films & listening to music, and a little bit of web browsing. I will use it for internet, some TV- any good for downloading on there directly, rather than streaming, or is it better to connect to my laptop and transfer it over? We don't have a blackberry in the house, we have a Samsung, but it is able to tether to that for 3G if needed, right?

My 11 yr old has one of these and i've ordered one each for my other children who are 7 and 9.They are a lot more stable OS wise than Android tabs and so are more child friendly
  • I have no idea why anyone would buy one of these over a Nexus 7.

I have no idea why you would want to post this.

The Nexus 7 is a great little machine - how much is a 64GB one ?
    Not available ?
What if you want to expand the Nexus 7's storage to 64 GB ?
    You can't.
    Can you get a Nexus 7 for £129 ?
Oh, they start at £30 more expensive than that for only 8GB do they ?

So what most people use their tablets for, eg Internet and media playing, the Playbook is cheaper and better. Limited app support, obviously, but if that bothers you then do pay more for a lesser machine in the Nexus 7. Speed etc comparisons are futile due to the differing operating systems, but just because the N7 has a faster processor doesn't make it a better machine.

(disclaimer, I don't own a playbook, I just thought an actual comparison of it would be handy rather than snide comments).

My partner bought the Playbook at the weekend & is very pleased with it. Other tablets like the Nexus 7 are probably a lot better but they are also a lot more expensive (Nexus 7 is about £199 for a 16gb). If you are not bothered about having access to millions of apps and just want it for browsing and downloading books/music/films then the Playbook is great & especially at this price. My partner also has a Blackberry phone which he uses for business therefore he can now sync his diary/contacts & use it for work so I hope I have given you an idea why anyone would buy one of these! Why do people post such pointless comments on these forums?

Is it fair to say that if my 2 kids both already have Ipod touches then these are a bit pointless? Just putting it out there ... thx

    Linky - £122+6.30 delivery - so £128.30 inc VAT.

Might see even better prices soon maybe.

Before you buy from pixmania, check out google for reports on their customer services and aftercare. Maybe google for Pixmania problems http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=pixmania+problems and check out reviews on sites like Trustpilot http://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.pixmania.co.uk.

thanks for posting this -and for all the great advice about it too.

Can i ask a wee question?

My daughters birthday is in november and she has asked for a blackberry curve (hers was stolen and not insured :-( )
would this tablet be a good idea to get as her xmas present so she can sync her blackberry she gets for her birthday or is it a bit silly having both?

    Thanks

Not snide at all, I do not understand why anyone would want a playbook when there are other devices out there that do things much better. Sure I agree there is less memory, I guess it depends on if that is important to you.
