The issue you may have if the cars not in your name. You may have issues getting insurance and proving the car is yours.

have you looked at adding the car to your insurance given its not going to turn a wheel?0 -
Put it on two strips of wood and sorn it or cover it in car bag.0

SORN the car and get a refund for what's left of the tax that's on it, you'll need to get a V14 form from the Post Office to do this or you can download it from here. At least then you don't have to fork out for tax and insurance on a car that isn't being used.
As long the car isn't being driven it shouldn't be a problem. I would put a cover over it as well so it's obvious it isn't being used.0 -

Are you serious? Do you think by merely covering a car is an exemption from it having to being taxed and insured? And what about the additional offences of not displaying a current tax disc, not displaying number plates and reflectors?
I really despair at some of the 'advice' given out sometimes!PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -

OP don't listen to bscape. If its on a public road it must be taxed AND insured whether its being used or not. SORN is only for if its stored on private land.0 -

Good lord, have you guys actually read the thread? A statutory off road notification means that the car has to be, erm, off the road. Whether or not it's actually being used is neither here nor there.SORN the car and get a refund for what's left of the tax that's on it, you'll need to get a V14 form from the Post Office to do this or you can download it from here. And no, sticking a bit of wood under the wheels doesn't mean that it's off the road, and it wouldn't be illegal for someone to lift up the cover and look at the numberplate (and obscuring your numberplate is an offence in itself), whatever the genius lawyer in the pub might have told you.
To be legal the OP's options are to insure it, or to take it off the road - it's that simple. If she has a friend or relative with a driveway or garage who might be willing to store it for a while, that might be the easiest solution. Remember that it will certainly need insuring if she drives it to the storage spot - day insurance is usually not too expensive.0 -

The executors should have done this as part of winding up his estate.

Weirdly this might actually work.
Forget the morals of it but I remember lots of motorbikes being parked on the pavements in london with bin liners over the reg plate.
The parking bizzies were only allowed to touch the vehicle to issue a ticket, nothing more so removing the bag to see the reg plate was illegal. No reg plate, no ticket.
Wonder if the same would be true of a cover? Would they be allowed to lift it up? If not, they wouldn't know whether the car underneath was tax/insured etc and displaying a disc is a mute point.
Be interesting to know if it would basically be a standoff.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
It wouldn't stop DVLA noticing that the tax has run out and starting their process to fine etc.
If they are driving around then I wouldn't think the same rule applies to them as the parking bizzies as their role is to find untaxed/uninsured vehicles. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
