I had to go back to bed, sorry I wasn't around to reply.
I am probably going to be off for at least another 4 weeks and I will be eligible for SSP as my employer doesn't pay sick pay after 3 days.
However my employer is quite a long commute which will put in jeopardy when I can return to work, nearly 3 hours commuting after recuperation would hinder things, hence the reason I think I would be better to resign, let him find someone who can start ASAP and I can concentrate on getting better and then when fit finding employment nearer to home.
I think someone asked my weekly wage - I don't know I'm afraid, I'm paid monthly but my annual salary is £20k per annum.
Thanks to everyone for their help. I turned all phones off today and had two messages left on voicemail asking for information regarding office procedures etc. I haven't responded as yet.

I think you should take all the calls from your boss and be as helpful as possible, as someone else said very few illnesses make you dumb.
The other side of this particular coin is that having made yourself as available as possible to your employer thus keeping things as normal as possible then he should do the same and carry on paying you your normal wage0 -
I have answered as many questions as I could and even thought about the situation afterwards and sent emails. However, I am not being paid, I have received 3 days pay and am now expected to have SSP.0

If you are not being paid by employer for being off work sick then he should not ring you asking you questions about work. Sorry just my opinion.
Hope you get better soon, do not let work situation get you down because your recuperation is far more important right now.
Do not feel guilty about work, if you are honest with them and tell them you do not think you will be ready to return to work for a while couldn't he/she get someone to temporarily do your job?? Clearly you are an asset to this company because they cannot do certain things without asking you whilst you are off work poorly so hopefully when you are ready, fit and well you can return back to work with current employer.0 -

If he thought that much of you he would pay you or at the very, very least send you flowers and a get well card. You must think of yourself first and if it will make you feel better then resign. My boss is VERY unsympathetic for people who go sick, they are a burden on him and he slags them off unrepentently to me when its happened to other staff.
I know my name is mud at the moment because I am poorly but he is very unforgiving and very nasty when others are ill.
We don't even get extra tiime off at christmas (i.e. half a day christmas eve) or get a christmas card or birthday card. I've been there over a year and he still doesn't know the names of my children :-(
Its upsetting that I am leaving the company in the lurch but I am not someone to take time off willy nilly, and some compassion would be nice but would never happen I'm afraid.0 -
Have you talked to ACAS? I would seriously consider getting their advice on what to say to your employer. Because regardless of whether or not you are on full pay or SSP, he should NOT harass you when you're sick. There may be a form of words you can use to point out that because you're signed off sick, you can't be held responsible for anything you say or do ... so shouldn't be asked to say or do anything. I know that insurance is one reason why you CAN'T work while signed off.
I would forgive my boss for ringing when I'm sick IF it was an emergency (like getting the salaries into people's bank accounts!) But if I didn't get full pay for the first 3 months of any sickness, I'd be a darned sight less forgiving ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Doesn't sound like someone you should work for anyway. If you can afford to quit then at the moment your really not losing anything because your not being paid anyway!
Alternatively if your not going to quit..when he calls next time. Answer something along the lines of. Well I appreciate your calls, however due to my medical condition the doctor has advised that spending lengthy time on the phone is hindering my recovery and I'm keen to to return to my job as soon as possible. So if you don't mind I will call you once a week to give you an update on my situation.
Well something like that. Basically make him feel bad that he's calling because he's not making your situation better but your also saying how much you want to go back which will make him feel good.0 -

Thanks for all your messages.
I have decided to resign with immediate effect. I can't cope with the commute and also I feel that I will be pushed into returning to work before I'm ready due to the size of the business.
Hopefully now my employer can find a replacement and I can recoup in suitable time.
