AVG or advast?

Basically thinking of buying a new laptop and was having a good old read through many posts. A lot seems to have changed since last time I was in the world of PCs. I've always been a fan of AVG - the free edition but I keep seeing Advast mentioned, is that the best option of the two or are they generally on par with each other?

Many thanks!

Well at least they Microsoft don't ask you to to install Chrome(avast) nor other useless bits of carp like Toolbars etc ad nauseam, well ok they do offer Bing(o)

Thanks for the responses, I didnt need a link for the download but was just curious why avast is thought to be better than AVG from people who may have used both as if there really is not much in it then I'll still to what I know. But again thanks for responding, off to research a bit!

Nothing stirs up the forum like a good "my anti-virus is better than yours" discussion, does it?
According to PCPro's recent giant test, the first part of closed's comment is incorrect, the second is correct. They found AVG detected 98% of malware threats v. 94% for Avast. However, Avast had a super-light footprint of 52MB against a thumping 259MB for AVG. They said that it wouldn't be a problem on a modern PC with 4GB of RAM, but on older machines it would be a drag. You (don't) pay your money and take your choice!
Their final comment about Avast was "Overall though, it's tough to recommend Avast when AVG's free client has the edge in the detection stakes"
I use NOD32 by the way!

If you look around you will find all sort of "in our tests, xx found yy%". Unless the test methodology is clear and comprehensive (none are), it's meaningless. Results will vary from day to day, and test to test.
