Whoever has care of the child can put in a claim for child benefit, and the benefits that go along with this - CTC, ...
If more than one person has care of the child (especially if the persons with care of the child are not members of a couple), then the differences in total benefit payable can be quite large, depending on who claims.
Plus, CB claimed for a child of under 5 (at the moment) entitles you to income support, if a single parent.
If the house(s) have been adapted for the disabled, it may be possible to drop a council tax band.

Exactly who claims IS/carers allowance/child benefit/... over the two households is a quite complex topic.

As is if the boy/girl are a couple for benefits purposes.
It may be reasonable to argue either way.

Then there is the fun issue of how this'll all change under universal credit, and with the benefit cap, but that's a little way down the road.

What really needs to be done is to sit down with someone who knows the benefit system, and do a 'better off' calculation to find out which benefits who should claim.

Good god no. He can,t support himself one little bit. They can see which road this is going down, quite sadly and a baby will be involved.

It will be down to the grandmother.

    What's his disability?

    oh i see. Thanks.

Sorry, she is saying, Disability living allowance and the ACTUAL disability of middle rate of £288.00 every fourth week.

Are you saying the son is getting both elements of DLA - mobility and care? Is that where the C is coming from? Care?

DLA care component high rate is £77.45 a week, so that would seem somewhere near.

DLA mobility component is £54.05 or £20.55 per week, depending on the level.

OH! Hang on. I think it must be:

DLA mobility low rate @ £20.55 + DLA care middle rate @ £51.85 = £289.60 per four weeks.

Or could it be CA (carer's allowance) and the OP thinks it's Disability Caring Allowance?

I agree with rogerblack this is no place to ask such complicated benefit questions. The benefits of everyone need to be looked at as depending on who is claiming then premiums will be lost and gained and the grandmother can claim for both the parent and the baby if they wish. There are tax credits, income support, ESA, child benefit, sure start grant all which have time limits and that's without the grandparents benefits. Don't bother with turn2us just tell her to go and see an experienced adviser.

You can't guess benefits and advice with half the information is reckless.

Without reading each and every post on this thread - so apologies if this question has already been debated - is it in anybody's interest that this pregnancy continues?

You do not say what disabilites the father has - is it possible that his disabilities could be inherited by the baby? And with the mother being so young, could she/would she be able to cope?

Have they had any counselling about abortion?

I know what an emotive subject this is - and I will be honest, personally I know that I could not go through an abortion - but all options should be carefully considered.

This is not an ideal environment for a baby to be born into.

I completely agree, thorsoak. It has already been stated that neither of the parents will be able to cope and that it will all be down to the grandmother.

    A very honest post,
I don't 100% agree with abortion, But I do believe that there are times when it might be best to go down the route ,
There are many gray areas and for/ageist arguments with abortion.

And maybe this might be one of them.
If Mum dose not feel she could go though and live with this (and some can not) Maybe adoption might be a good idea?

Mum need all the facts and all the help and advice she can get.
Maybe, Social services, her doctor and her midwife could all sit down with her and a adult that she trusts and is capable of having her and her unborn baby's best wishes at hart. Have many chats, time thinking and work out some sort of game plan. What ever that will be.
I know that all this is easier said than done. But If Mum decides to have the baby and keep it. She is going to need a hell of a lot of help. And if dad is not up to the task then there needs to be somebody in her life some were that will be willy to do this. With the help of doctors, midwife and all the services that are there to support Mum and Baby.

All that said and Done, I really do hope that something can be worked out for the best of all In involved here.
Whats is to be done for the best? Well I don't know all the facts so I can not say.
But I hope that things work out well.
