What as that got to do with the price of fish? If they can afford and be old enough to smoke, the they can afford and are old enough to pay the adult fare. Simples.
tbh, I'd be encouraging them to report you, and claim back the fare plus compensation, if that was your criteria for deciding to penalise them.0 -

Lol! Penalise? !!!!!! are you on?? I'm a bus driver doing my job which is charging the appropriate fares to who i consider to be passengers who are 16 and over. If they say they are under and I have no reason to doubt them, then fair enough. BUT if they demonstrate that they are indeed over 16 by a) having the appearance of being over the age of 16 and b) smoking or having the odd tattoo, then how am I penalising them by charging half fare?
Following your logic, a shop keeper could potentially sell alcohol to someone under 18 after observing that person smoking before entering the shop!PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -

Adult fare?
Half fare?
You're not making any sense.
"Following your logic, a shop keeper could potentially sell alcohol to someone under 18 after observing that person smoking before entering the shop!"
That would be your logic. You're claiming anyone who smokes must be adult age.
Time to give up on you I think.0 -

When I was a kid it used to be full fare as soon as you were fourteen, even though the school leaving age was 16. There are many options available to those over 15 to get discounted tickets though.
Anyway, hopefully the OP will come back and tell us what the £100 actually is so that the genuine experts above can advise further.
The £100 is the full adult single fare I believe. I'm only passing on info from a three sentence Facebook message though.
Although an interesting topic the relevant people won't read this thread unless I point it out to them (that being his brother who is an acquaintance).0 -

Again, there is NO Adult fare. Children can quite well buy the full standard fare should they so wish and use for purposes of getting a discount using certain cards but there is no Adult fare.
Please stop confusing this.
For ticketing purposes children must be 15 or under for the discounted child fare. They were not. They did not have a valid ticket for travel when asked.
What exactly were they given? a PF in PF areas is either £20 or twice the single fare to the next station, which ever is the greater.
you need to clarify so that stigy and others can give you better advice.
or go over to HERE for the best advice from those in the trade both in ticketing and legal matters rather then having a thread full of people trying to discuss what a child is.
For the record - they are annoying."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
If the lad is on your Christmas pressie buying list, I suggest a railcard as a suitable thought.0

This problem has been made overcomplicated by nonsense about cigarettes, alcohol, tattoos, morality and 101 other things. The law is clear on the age for full and discounted fares. At 16 said boy could, if he chose, had a student railcard to reduce the price. It was his choice a. not to do so b. to avoid the fare and seek to defraud the rail company. On this occasion he got caught(who knows how many previous ones he had not) so he or his parents will eventually have to pay for this offence.
With luck this will be ignored and the penalty when it does come be very much larger.0 -
I can't believe he didn't lie about his age! Dozy so and so!0

True, but that's MSE for you.so he or his parents will eventually have to pay for this offence.
Remember it's the 16 yr old that's accountable and not the parents, the TOC can't demand anything from the parents, if the bank of mum and dad wants to pay that their choice. (for the record I wound pay for my child to keep him out of trouble, then his xbox goes on ebay:D)opinions4u wrote: »I can't believe he didn't lie about his age! Dozy so and so!
The only thing the guard/RPI can demand is name and address, but if he feels that someone is lying to him in order to defraud the train company the guard can get the police to lift said person at the next station.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0
