neighbour's untaxed van - moral dilemma

Hi all,
Background: I live in a close where we all have 2 allocated parking spaces outside our houses and there are 2 visitor spaces. It's not a private road.

About 2 years ago a new family moved in and parked their large white van in the visitor spaces (takes up both of them) because they don't want it blocking the light from their front window. I didn't get involved in the 'neighbourly discussions' at the time as they weren't very nice, in the end we just all got on with our visitors parking elsewhere.

Issue: The white van has stopped moving at all and its tax disc is out of date (expired Feb). The owner runs the engine about once a week. I get the impression it's used as a store room/overspill for their house. The last time I saw the space empty was a couple of months ago.

Do I report it as untaxed or am I just being petty because of the visitor space annoyance? Could it be that as it's a visitor space it counts as off road?

thanks. x

Report it online via the DVLA website. If it does not have tax it should not be there.

Have a little word that your surprised the white elephant is still there and ask when the scrap man is coming for it. If he's too thick to understand, report it.
Your house and your transport are probably your two biggest investments, why let superchav devalue them?

Why warn him? If the DVLA have not chasing already it could be that he has not updated the owners address.

  • If it's not taxed and not being driven, I wouldn't be surprised to find that it isn't insured as well.

NOt having tax may get the DVLA to act eventually, but if it turns out not to have insurance then reporting it for this may get a far quicker response.

Are you certain it's not private? How can you have allocated spaces on the public highway? Even if there are residents' permits they usually only entitle you to park wherever you can find a space, they don't allocate a specific space as yours.

I too live in a close, and while most of the road is adopted, the parking bays containing the allocated parking aren't.

The op isn't strictly entitled to make that check.

I use to live in a small close with limited parking, someone new moved in who did car repairs from home he lived in the first house outside the close but worked outside my house and i often had untaxed vehicles outside. I phoned and reported him and the Dvla/ police took a car away. Never parked there again.

  • Normally i'd say live and let live, but the van owner is being selfish and unreasonable.

Having a word would probably be met with a vacant expression.

You have little choice other than to get your normal parking and lives back, otherwsie what next?, will he get a steel ex shipping container and bolt it to the ground permanently?
