    The Samsung has
    - a faster processor (CPU Mark 3,971 : 3,584)
    - a bigger hard drive (750 : 500 GB)
    - a longer claimed battery life ( 6.5 : 4.5 hours).

historically acer are a more reliable machine.

I repair a lot of laptops and don't get many acer machines in at all.

samsung aren't that high but i do see them and most of the time they need new motherboards!

if it was my money it would be the acer, it's pointless having a top spec machine if it only lasts a short period of time
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

I don't believe so. If you Google 'laptop malfunction rate', Acer is at the bottom

An alternative you can consider is Lenovo z580 from saveonlaptops. £550 with £50 cash back. With i5 3210m, 8gb ram, 1000gb HDD, gt630m

Other recent surveys have found exactly the opposite to your experience.

    For example:

Rescuecom: The computer reliability report scores for 2012 are:

    1. Lenovo/IBM (281)
    2. Toshiba (190)
    3. Samsung (156)
    4. Apple (151)
    5. Asus (126)
    6. HP/Compaq (100)
    7. Dell (68)
    8. Sony (64)
    9. Acer (40)

    PC World:
"Four companies earned better-than-average marks on our survey's reliability measures, with Apple going a category-leading five for five. Samsung and Toshiba tied for the second spot, thanks to three positives and no negatives each; Samsung's strengths were in few problems on arrival, few dead laptops, and overall owner satisfaction with reliability, while Toshiba scored well on few dead laptops, few components needing replacement, and overall owner satisfaction. Asus deserves an honorable mention here for a low proportion of significant problems and better-than-average overall owner satisfaction with reliability."
  • We have a Samsung that has ben nothing but trouble. Never again.

When you get the Samsung, please don't buy it from Currys!

Both Amazon and Kikatek are much better sources, and there are so many of the Series 3 models to choose from - fifteen here. (They differ in the usual factors: CPU, memory size, version of Windows 7 installed, and so on.)

Note that some models have "a free 5-year warranty upgrade".

I repair a lot of laptops and I get plenty of Acers in, screen hinges and power sockets being the most common problems.

Advent and E-Systems are rebadged Acer.
