  • My future is extremely well protected, thank you.

I suspect the OP's daughter in this case will be significantly better off for many years thanks to the baby she's carrying. And that's the rub. I was working 60+ hours a week at 19 to build a career and pay my own way. Nowadays seems a quick sh@g and your future's set.

    Totally agree with you there
  • I just saw the way you were saying you had never claimed benefits, was just saying never say never, as I would have 6 years ago at the age of 41 after 20 years marriage.

We, as a couple, had paid a massive amount of tax- ex an IT banker (lol), and then parents get ill, you fall out of love..., as a result of family pressure you break up.

Very different to the flippant attitudes nowadays.. totally agree with that :o

Can I just ask politely why people who stress that they have no need for help with benefits/appear to have no knowledge of benefits to offer, visit/post on these boards?

It's a genuine question rather than a dig -it's just that I find boards I know nothing about of no interest so wondered what the pull is?

My husband is in IT too (we're both consultants), and we have a ltd company. We also have a fully offset mortgage, insurance and have spent years building up significant liquid assets. So if the worst did happen, it would be DECADES before either of us were eligible for benefits.

I don't mean to sound smug (my best mate was on benefits as a single mum for many many years), but surely this is what we should be encouraging teenagers to do. Getting pregnant isn't an accident, and nor should it be a passport to a life where everything is paid for those who work.

Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

  • Well, call me controversial, but first I'm going to congratulate the OP on the news that she's having a grandchild and then try to help her with her question. I know, I'm a rebel without a clue......

Congratulations! What your daughter will get depends on her circumstances - is she going to live with the baby's father or be a single mum, will they live alone or live with you? etc etc. She can put her details into a benefits calculator and it will give her a good idea of what to expect. Good luck with your new arrival!

I'm getting £20 a week child benefit, which I top up to £100 a month and it goes straight to my 2 year old son's account. It's the only benefit either of us has ever ever claimed.

That's after more than 18 years of work for both me and OH, and well over half a million quid paid in tax over that time between us.

Does that seem a good deal to you?

Sick of these pontificators making judgements. You never know what position you will be in. It can change overnight. I have beekn in much better financial situation than you, stop gloating and look to protect your future. Half a million- pittance!

Stop gloating, you may eat your words someday. Pride comes before a fall, especially nowadays.

You are getting your posters mxied up, missus, I never said anything about half a million, you maybe need to start reading the thread again and getting your facts and your posters straight before you post such vitriol

If you read it all again you will see that I am saying exactly the same as you about life changing in an instant.

You talk about pontifications, ha, you have no idea what kind of financial situation I have/am in, how could you, how do you know, you post is patronising to say the least. Dont patronise me sweetheart, I could go on but wont, you see I dont need to.............

  • no wonder I don't post on benefits boards, the Benefits bashers look at it as their invitation to play. *YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED*.
Best to turn to sites as ALWAYS like Benefits and Work how to fill in forms, how to appeal, pitfalls etc, Training for Professionals...and Rightsnet, read Society Guardian for latest news (sorry always depressing!) and before turning niavely-to forums like these-particularly MSE which should have a warning on it to those innocent posters who think that by posting, they will get help in same way as if MSE were to view themselves as Amateur Welfare Rights advisors (etc).
I get afraid of posting here because my advice is the same, be independent, get independent advice from specialist sites before even attempting boards like these. Suss out forums before posting. urban 75 has a much better attitude than MSE but there are some wonderful people and amazing help on here as well so not totally black.
Wise up! and best wishes I have letter to write descriptors as to why they go me wrong.

I understand where you are coming from but despite the problems with this board there is a lot of good advice given here- lots of contributors ARE welfare rights advisers or similar. Generally the genuine advice given here is good and errors will be picked up on by other contributors. Anyone can tell the difference between a 'get a job' post and a genuine response.
  • The 'get a job' response is a unthinking reaction to the difficult to resolve problems and tension between the need to be economically secure and the need to be able to explore work options that get you off benefits.
The later you start this process ie after 35 the more difficult it gets.
Disabilities of all various sorts only compound the difficulties and complexities that people like me face.
The hasty reaction means we are not able to discuss and explore intelligently the way to achieve both [aims].
I would like to see those who don't need benefits put themselves in our shoes for a change and not believe the dwp/media efforts to discredit claimants.
