Supermarket putting goods that have been on floor in chill cabinets

Options
Does anyone know whether food safety regs allow for items which have been on the floor can be placed back on sale. Items I have seen have been packaged cheese, milk, cold chill meals, bread etc.

My concern is that the supermarket floor is dirty - any contamination is then transferred to my fridge, work tops cutting boards etc.

Store managers have given me different responses.

Please only reply if you know the actual regs / standards as I appreciate that different people have different standards.

  • They also go in diesel lorries and the fumes get into the load. All food then get contaminated.

all supermarkets do this, if you saw the real goings on you wouldnt eat again. Best not to think about it x

I totally agree, but what the eye does not see ......

For example, if you saw a chef picking his nose and sneezing over your food, would you happily still eat it? Of course this happens, but if you don't see it. My dad was a chef, but hardly ever ate out ;)

Also if this is what they do in front of you, what do they do behind your back?

As I said, I wanted responses based on law and standards rather than telling me about diesel - anyway, what's wrong with diesel

I think you are being paranoid.

There may well be 'contamination' on the floor. But no more than the basket or shopping trolley you use ( when was the last time you saw one of those being cleaned?), the lorry it was transported in, the pallet it was placed on during transportation, and the boot of your car to get it home. You will have contamination on your hands from using the trolley (the last person to use it may have all kinds of germs on their hands) and there will be contamination on the cash you hand over and receive at th checkout.

'Contamination' is all around us. But there are levels of contamination. Routine 'contamination' as you call it will be dealt with by your body's natural immune system. By trying to live under a sterile regime, you aren't allowing your body to develop its immune system and as such will be more prone to allergies and more susceptible to colds and routine illnesses.

Years ago I was going to be a chef and worked in a kitchen for a while. I can guarantee that if you ever saw what went on in restaurant kitchens you would never eat out.

If you're going to prepare your food on the worktop itself, you need to keep it clean. I use chopping boards that are washed and then put away where they can't get dirty in the meantime.

You are posting in an open forum. Expect the world world and his wife to offer their opinion whether you like it or not.

I agree - no harm in asking though.

The food isn't on the floor though, it's inside the packaging.

    Very true.

Also, it is completely illegal to sell food that has touched any area of floor. It is also illegal, as a member of the public, not to report this to your local police authority.

Thank you for confirming this - I've just phoned the police and am holding in a queue to be answered - I suspect I am not alone in reporting such occurrences.

    Thanks again

The police? Christ, I hope you're not holding up a real emergency call or any other call more worthy of police attention.
