Can I pay in this cheque?

Hi All,
Just a quick question, I have been given a cheque by a relative payable to Mrs A Surname, the A is the initial of my husband when it should be an E for me, this has been done in the old fashioned way that I am the Mrs version of my husband's name if you know what I mean?
It is difficult for me to get a new one done and I need to pay it in soon, the branch is difficult to get to and I only want to go if I know it will be cashed. I have tried calling the bank's main number but they say they can't tell me if the branch will accept or not!
Thanks in advance

I'd be suprised if they even noticed .... how is the name on the account written ?0

Technically no, the cheque cannot be accepted as it is made out to a different person than you. However, if you go to an 'older' cashier in the branch they will probably accept it - don't quote me on this though as I depends on whether the cashier accepts that the cheque is intended for you. As the poster above says, they may not even notice - I would say this depends on the value of the cheque as well, couple of hundred should be ok, couple of thousand and they may notice.0

Do you and your husband have a joint account? You would have less difficulty paying it in to that.Optimists see a glass half full

Pessimists see a glass half empty
Engineers just see a glass twice the size it needed to be

How much is it for?
How well do you now your branch staff - for a relatively small amount it should be no problem.
If its over £100 say then it may be problematical.0 -
I was told before that the best place was a cheque deposit machine, as the staff have to check them in bulk and literally skim past them - the machine reads the numbers from the cheques so they are already processed, the staff member just has to authorise them.
I don't know if its still the same.0 -
Take the 's' off Mrs and put in husbands account.0

As fraudsters tend to use these machines instead of paying in face to face this is not a good idea!I was told before that the best place was a cheque deposit machine, as the staff have to check them in bulk and literally skim past them - the machine reads the numbers from the cheques so they are already processed, the staff member just has to authorise them.

Cheques paid in via an IDM now probably are scrutinised more than counter transactions.0 -
It my be easier for you to sign the back of the cheque and post it to your bank with a pay in slip from your cheque book."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

You can't.
Rightly, the cheque shouldn't be accepted, because for all the bank knows the "Mrs A Whatever" on the cheque is actually a completely different person from the OP and the OP is trying to take what is rightfully theirs. If that was the case and they accepted it, the real Mrs A Whatever could then sue the bank for conversion in giving money that is rightfully hers to a third party.
That may be frustrating to you, but it's the thought process that goes into these things.urs sinserly,
