  • My council are actually proposing charging full council tax on people who's homes have been repossessed, which means that the poor devils lose their home and are then charged for something that no longer belongs to them :mad::mad:

That is barmy! Surely if the bank takes ownership of a property, then the bank should pay the council tax.
  • I cant remember who said it in a previous post about the value ranges disappearing but I have noticed in my local sainsburys that there are loads of the Basic range missing (curry sauce, sweet & sour sauce, pasta sauce, cotton wool to name but a few that I noticed). I am hoping its because they are changing their range or something as we rely on these in our store for winter/tighter months.

I think I am going to stock up on rice, pasta, olive oil, canned and packet foods as my store cupboard is running low. Will have to wait until payday though!

I have decided to just worry about getting through a month at a time, there is no use fretting, we all know that we will be hit hard and the best thing that we can do is to try and get each other through these difficult times, and if we can with a little humour if possible, which will help lift our spirits a bit.

On that bright note Byeeee for now x

    Couldn't agree more.
i now just concentrate on a week at a time, and i know that coming on here seeing others doing the same as what i do, to save money, really helps to raise spirits, have a bit of a giggle, and get advice.

Have noticed that too. I do have a small stock cupboard, and I am at present stocking up on basis for Christmas and January.

I find food shopping very depressing as the fall back (Cheap) food I use to rely on is either now too dear or not being sold any-more.

I was only saying to a friend the other day that when my DS( 19) was a toddler basic white bread was 21p and baked beans were 8p.
I cant even afford Corned Beef anymore:(

I have just started my Christmas/January shopping. I am noting it down on 'Who doesn't have a stock cupboard' if any one wants to join in. I buy one or two items a week that are on offer or cheap.( Toothpaste, kitchen towel pasta etc).

That way if food prices rise or we get snowed in I'm ready. Also in Dec I can buy some nice things with the stamps I have been saving.:)

With repossession as it stands you are only liable for the council tax until the house is back in the possession of the mortgage company. If a person moves out before the house is in the possession of the bank and the house is empty they can apply for a 6 month exemption - allowing them not to have to pay the CT for those 6 months. I wonder whether it's this rule that the council is looking to quashing? I find it very difficult to believe that a house that is no longer legally owned by a person still makes that person liable for the CT. What do you think, do you think that would make more sense?

We're in London and there are lots of people here who've dropped below the poverty line. We're relatively fortunate but that doesn't mean that we don't feel for those in difficult situations.

I urge you all to speak to your local Councillors, MPs and potential political candidates about your feelings. There are parties who do have no major financial bias, no interest in bolstering an economic situation which only benefits the wealthy. If they meet your standards, vote for them. Don't be worried about a wasted vote. Encourage others to do the same. It would be far more effective to get someone like the Greens in power or a coalition of parties with more social responsibility than rely on the broken promises of the three main parties. They need to understand that. And it's their reliance on us either thinking that we can't change anything or voting for anyone else would be a waste that keeps them sure that they will always be in power.

Even if we didn't get the party we voted for we could shake up the main political forces in the country and I think we could have a chance to push them out completely. It will have far more effect than any strike or protest march could have as most of the time they just ignore it - and can as they are so removed from most people's lives.

We can make a difference if we assert ourselves and don't just allow ourselves to be walked over.

It's when the ordinary person feels or becomes dissociated with what's going on that injustice triumphs.

I popped onto this thread for the first time tonight and have to say this is the most truthful and profound statement that I have read for a long time.

I'm not disappearing, I'm far too fond of sound of my own opinions to do that.

I do feel that it's far too simplistic to say - We don't like this government's way of dealing with things so let's get rid of them. I don't like it either but I didn't like the last lot, particularly as it was their stupid policies that emptied our coffers and caused this situation. But I don't know of any party that I could honestly and wholeheartedly support.

If we ran our homes the way the politicians run the country we'd all be out on the streets by now. And if owners of small (or large) businesses ran their companies like the politicians run our lives, they'd be in prison.

It's tragic that commonsense seems to have vanished. Some of the things that go on make me feel that I'm living in some parallel universe.

I think I'm going to pull up the drawbridge any time now.

I wouldn't say it's simplistic. It is simple, which often deters people. I regularly deal with stuff at work where people say "It can't be that simple or we'd be doing it already" yet time and time again it's shown it can be that simple.

We have a party in power that didn't exist before the last election and nobody voted for their policies as they didn't advertise any before they came into power. And all political parties will stand by things that people disagree with. However when there are parties that enforce massive cutbacks while ensuring that tax avoidance, that could easily pay for the deficit, can continue and allow nationalised banks to continue practices that got us into a mess anyway then letting them know that they will be gone at the next election may motivate them. And if not them, then their opposition. Find a party that will support you and go for them - if people feel dissatisfied with the three who rule then try for someone who closer approaches your position. And if there's nobody around standing for them contact the party and see if you can.

Politics is made to seem complex and unchangeable because if people realised how easily it could be understood and changed then it would happen.:D
